Spare Helmet
« on: January 02, 2015, 09:49:00 AM »
One thing that people often comment to me is if I have a spare helmet that they can use to go riding with.

The answer to that is 'no', I'm not in the habit of keeping helmets around for no reason, but is it even a practical consideration?  I mean let's say some random person asked to ride and you said 'yes' for whatever reason.  For some reason I'm just not seeing them fitting into any helmet I might have in my collection.  They're just too customizable and personal to have a 'generic' one.  Heck, my helmet took forever to figure out the fit.

Or am I wrong, is there a helmet that generally works for - say 'normal human female'?  If so I don't see any reason not to get one.  I just kind of assumed that if you bought a helmet it was for that person, not everyone who wanted to ride with you.

I missed opportunity a few months ago to have a random reasonably attractive young thing onboard who thought a ride would be fun because I still haven't installed buddy pegs.

And yes, the helmet seems like a no-brainer for potential liability, but you'd still always have to be carrying it for such an occaision.

I bought a spare helmet, my wife uses it for the occasional ride.

If I were a dating, single guy, I would have a spare helmet [or two] so if my hot date wanted to go for a spur of the moment ride, it would be there and ready to go.

I've got 2 helmets but that's mainly because I have a job where I can get pretty dirty at times and with no showers at work my helmet tends to pick some of that junk up so I have 1 helmet that I use when riding to work and back and another much cleaner helmet for when my wife and I go riding. This is the helmet my wife got for Christmas and just so there's no misunderstanding I did NOT getting a matching pair for myself.  ;)

Who carried an extra strapped on one on their sissy bar 'back in the day' once in awhile in case there was a damsel in distress ?  ;)

I carried one, but it was a pain without a sissy bar. And I only did when I knew someone was going to be available for a ride. I worried more about the ride than I did the fit of the helmet tho. If a friend asked to borrow one, I'd say yes. It's better than nothing. Not to imply its a good practice, however.
