CB 550 Sprockets 15-37
« on: January 21, 2015, 11:34:47 AM »
Hello,

As You might know, I've got my own build thread in project shop, but today I made a mistake during online shopping and I need fast feedback - I've ordered 15-37 sprockets. I've seen some graphs on the forum describing RPM and wheel speed during different sprocket setup. Does anybody know where I can find it ? What do You think about 15-37 setup? I've got old 17-37 in a pretty good condition. As long as I can go about 130 kph I don't care about max speed, so acceleration is more important (city mover). Bike is CB 550 F 1978.

Thank you for your all replies !

Simon

Basically you'll be going to a gearing ratio of 2.47, where stock it's 2.18. You're looking at increased acceleration (which you already knew) and more chain wear when compared to stock. It'll just make the bike a lot more peppy around town. As far as the top end speed, i have no idea. Should be able to do still do at least 90 i would think.

Old thread, but still good info.

Might want to try going up in the back more than down in the front... and 2 teeth down in the front is a lot.

I tried a 15 front. .  really didn't feel a big difference in acceleration but it dropped the top end noticeably
Also the chain rubbed on the shield inside the engine cover wearing a big grove in less than 40 miles.

I didn't know they made a 78 F model.

I would stick with the 17T front and play with the rear sprocket. You could find a 38T maybe 40T. I went the other way with a 36T and didn't notice much difference in acceleration but a mellower RPM range at hiway speeds. I wasn't searching for that missing 6th gear as much.
