Tips for reinstalling stock neck bearings?
« on: January 21, 2015, 02:12:47 PM »
For reasons I won't go into, I'd like to reuse my stock steering stem bearings. They look okay and the races look fine, and there didn't seem to be any "notches" prior to disassembly.

I've never done it before though - I've always just banged 'em out and installed tapered AllBalls. So what's the proper way to "pack" them? And is there anything else I should know? Seems pretty straight forward....

Just use plenty of grease on the lower race to hold all the little balls in place. A big dollop of grease on the other side....spread it around a bit & carefully insert tree into frame! Repeat for the top race and you're done.

...and then adjust the top nut as per the factory manual and at the specified intervals
If it works good, it looks good...

I will also recommend to place a white towel under the bike when you lift up the frame to get at those lower ball bearings. They will drop out and are much easier to locate if they do not bounce all over the place. Keep track of how many on top and bottom too.
