I was wondering about the jet settings...
« on: October 09, 2006, 12:26:21 PM »
My CR carbs have arrived.  I was wondering about the jet settings.  How can I predict what size jetting to go with?  And how will I know when I have found the right combination?  Obviously, I know about reading the spark plugs and the “feel” of performance, but should it be tested another way?  Carbs are my mechanical weakness.

Thanks,

Sparty

Best way is an O2 probe. I dont know anything about the initial set up of CRs but once you have the bike running, check the exhaust with the O2 probe and tune accordingly. Optimum is supposed to be 13-1 air/fuel

Well, I dont know how much but you could probably get one at an autoparts store. You may even be able to rent one. Only thing I can suggest is to call around and see. I there is a place that tunes engines, you might be able to get them to help with the mix.

I looked into these, but decided that there are other places I'd rather spend the $, at least right now.

And the least expensive wideband system I found was the NGK AFX (often on ebay too):

You could also probably do it with a standard o2 sensor, but it essentially will give you high, ok, or low.

Apparently, the advantage of a wideband is that it'll tell you how high or how low.
