Need info regarding MAC exhausts for 1976 CB750K
« on: May 25, 2005, 05:34:47 AM »
Greetings all,

I consider buying a replacement exhaust system for my 1976 CB750K. I currently have the 4 into 4 HM341 pipes, but without the baffles. Which, I'm sure you can imagine, is ... L - O - U - D. Too loud. Until I find another bike for parts that still have a decent system (or a better bike than mine!), I'll replace the 4 into 4 with an aftermarket system.

So... I have a couple of questions for you.

(1) Is it better to go with 4 into 1, or 4 into 2 ?

(2) I asked around, some brand names came up, like MAC, Kerker and Jardine. general comment was: if you are to buy a rather "cheap" aftermarket, go with the MAC brand. What do you guys think?

(3) Also: about the MAC systems... I looked on the net and came up with these.

* 4 into 2 megaphone, part number 0011309
* 4 into 1 megaphone, part number 0011401
* 4 into 1 canister, part number 8011401

Anyone ever bought one of these? If so, what is the difference between "megaphone" and "canister"? Look? Performance?

(4) Still about aftermarket systems: does it fit "bolt to bolt", or will I have to make it fit?

Thank you very much in advance for all the precious informations you guys can give me. Anyone wants to email me directly: belangerpaul@hotmail.com.

Best regards,

Paul

...havn't replaced any of mine with these, but I can tell you, as long as u buy for your model/year, it should be a bolt to bolt fit...no mods...

Paul, I needed an inexpensive exhaust last spring when I purchased my CB750 from a yard sale.  The bike was ill fitted with a set of rusty-dented 4-4 drag pipes.  I bought a set of the 4-1 Mac Black w/ Chrome canister.  They were on sale for $179, so it was a good deal.  With the Mac's, you pretty much get what you pay for.  The chroming is "passable" and my black pipes needed sanding and repainting after one New England season.  The sound is fine and the performance, with velocity stacks and rejetting, is good.

The difference between megaphone and canister is purely aesthetic.  Just the look you prefer.

I'm always on the look out for a nice set of vintage 4-1 Jardines or Hookers or… that were available back in the '70's for my Project X.

Frankly, I'm only looking for a cheap replacement until I find another bike for parts. If that future bike is in such good shape that the 4 into 4 is indeed in good condition, then my actual bike will serve as the "parts bike" !

So, in the meantime, the cheaper (in terms of $$$) is the better solution. I've seen the 4 into 1 MAC canister at Dennis Kirk going for 217.00 USD (plus shipping and taxes I guess). It has a black manifold headers with a chromed ending (the canister). Last question would be: does it fit right on? I know that the manufacturer says it does fit, that you still have access to everything (oil filter, etc.), but I just want to make sure before I buy this. I live in Montreal, prov. of Quebec. It's really going to be a pain if I have to send it all back..!

Paul, I bought the same pipe you're considering and it bolted right on without a problem.  Clears the mainstand and other components.  Took my about 2 hours to drop the old pipes and mount up the Mac.  Good luck!

Check out this listing on EBay - 4548763104 .  This guy is making new baffles.  This auction has ended, but there may be more comming.

Pbelanger -
    I have the 1309's on my bike. see www.angelfire.com/falcon/comet2. I have a '70 K0. I had to return the first set they sent because the wouldn't fit, and the chrome was already peeling. The second set had better chrome, but getting them to fit was a pain. They are way to low, and make the center stand scrape the pavement in tight left turns. I'm just waiting (and saving) for a set of 4-into-4's.  ;)

Hi Fergie,

Did you have any trouble at all with the dismantling of the old pipes? Anything particular, tools, stuff to be careful for (likes rusted bolts, etc) ?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi all,

Just to let you know: I installed the MAC 4 into 1 on my bike last friday. Took me about 2 hours, bolted right on. I was luck enough that the no.4 Phillips screws came out VERY easily with penetrating oil.

Thanks a lot for all your sound advices.

Regards,

Paul
