Like many of you I have had a queer fascination (horror) with the legendary (notorious) Kawasaki H2 750 triple (Widowmaker), dating back to my high school days in the smoky 70s. By the end of the decade EPA had all but signed the death warrant for the entire 2-stroke subspecies, and the marketplace was by then indicating its preference for the somewhat calmer and more...survivable character of the silky 4-stroke 4s from Japan. Kawasaki departed the 2-stroke field with relative dignity, having somewhat detuned and calmed the snarling H2 by the end of the run in 1975, as they released their own mighty 4-stroke Z1 - a worthy successor to the quirky Widowmaker.

Like most small towns in the USA mine had the usual nutters that owned and rode these things, including one dude that stuffed the H2 motor into a shorter H1-500 chassis, the better to pull lurid wheelstands with I suppose, and the Boston Post Road near my house was frequently dosed with the acrid smell and sight of a cloud of blue Castrol 2-stroke in the air, the air rent with the shrieking sound of a two-stroke "on the pipe".  The Widowmaker? They should have nicknamed these things "The Skunk". I knew back then that sooner or later I was going to have to own one.

I had a brief dalliance a few years back when a friend and collector thinned his herd and sold me a pretty substantial collection of bikes and bits - 2 full chassis, NIB chambers, spare motors, and much more. I started collecting parts for a resto-mod project I had in my mind including a GSXR front end, braced swingarm, plus builder notes from back in the day about chassis stiffening that would be needed between these modern components, but a coast-to-coast move intervened around this time and I was forced to liquidate the project before it really began. There's a really nice dude in Hampton NH with a garage full of Triples parts right now, including my old stuff, and I hope its on the road by now.

Fast forward a few years and I was in California, browsing Craigslist for no good reason as we do, when up popped the bike you see here.

So I took it home, tripped over it for a year or so, avoided looking at it, humped it to Arizona when we moved here last year, and finally a month or so ago it had earned its spot on the lift for a quick going-through.

It was simultaneously better and worse than it looked. It was mostly there, although sporting several incorrect parts for a purist. The tank was rusty inside, and naturally both brakes and the master cylinder were well stuck. The steering head bearing was shot, fork leaky, swingarm pivot dry and creaky, and most of the rubber bits throughout were dry-rotted and punky. The carbs were surprisingly clean, but still needed a full clean-out. Cosmetics "not bad", paint is a cool purple/green flip-flop, chrome and alloy and wheels "not bad".

So a few weeks ago I tore in.

Job 1: Derust the tank. Bought 5 gallons of white vinegar, removed the petcock and blasted out the tank to get the loose stuff, corked the bung and filled it to the brim. Stuck it in the corner for a few days.

Drained it off a few days later, rinsed it with a quart of acetone, stuck the wet-dry vac in there in reverse and dried it out as fast as I could. A final dose of two-cyckle oil to coat it and I pronounced if suitable for service.

Pulled the front end apart to rebuild the fork and replace the steering head bearings.

Pulled the caliper and master cylinder apart to unstick the brakes:

Ultrasonic cleaned the petcock and reassembled it, twice just cause it was so excellent :-). It sealed the second time.

Ultrasonic cleaned and reassembled the carbs with a lot of help and guidance from my friend James. Replaced all the fuel lines and lubed all the cables:

Replaced the airbox and intake plenum and clamps, and put the front end back together, with a new set of brake lines, shortened slightly at the top to accommodate the superbike bars.

Cleaned everything within an inch of its life as it was apart, etc. Moved to the rear of the bike.

Took the rear end apart:

and the swingarm pivot...

...and the drum brake and cush drive. Cleaned it all out, greased it where I outta, degreased it where I outta, etc.

Unstuck the rear brake pivot:

Sent the rear brake lever off for plating.

Installed new bushings in the swingarm, reassembled it:

Put it back together:

Recovered the seat:

Installed the pipes:

and YES Steve-o, that is indeed my Z1 that snuck into the picture there to the right. That's on deck :-).

Finally I could wait no longer. Pulled it off the lift yesterday and drug it out the back of the shop, with a fire extinguisher in hand with the pin pulled as all the best moto restorers keep nearby :-).

FIRE IN THE HOLE!

Its got a cracked overflow tube in #3 I need to solder (notice the growing puddle beneath), and a decent amount of MMO in the cylinders plus the 2-stroke oil washed from the tank to burn off, hence the prodigious amount of smoke. But it seems to be running great!

I have plenty of final fettling to do to get this all sorted, but we should have an actual maiden voyage one day next week. Will video that as well when I do.

So that's my mini build thread on the H2 up to date. More next week as we finish up.

I notice in the third picture, a set of Recaros sitting on the shop floor. Are these for observers to lounge in with a cool frothy beverage, or do they belong elsewhere? Perhaps a modern approach to a King and Queen for some crazy custom, restomod, bar hopping triple you have planned up your sleeve?

Haha, great idea Cal! Not my seats though, they belong to the owner of that Volvo, naturally ;-). I share this shop with two other guys.

I had one that I bought stolen and recovered, with chopped wiring harness and dropped on side breaking magneto rotor housing.

It barked when I started it  ;D

Neigbours complained about smoke and riding on light throttle around town was very snatchy

Nils,

You need to pick up and read the following book -- featuring the narrator's adventures with his first bike in the 70s (a Kawasaki H2):

http://www.mcnallyjackson.com/bookmachine/conversations-motorcycle-jack-riepe

It's an entertaining read.

Well done, that's a good looker. You'll be grinning ear to ear when you get out on it. Primitive compared to new, but oh so much fun.

If a guy had money to burn, Curtis makes race frames for these, with stout suspension, and brakes that worked... that fun factor grows.  ::) Sorry man just can't help it.

Not much! I got that carb sealed up today by sleeving it with larger brass tubing. Took off the exhaust, cleaned it at the spigots at the cylinder and sealed it with high temp copper RTV. Fingers crossed it seals it up. Fixed a balky brake switch, installed the replated brake pedal, and some missing cotter pins. I believe it is rideable now! Or at least when the RTV sets up.

Still need to get the front turn signals installed and working, and see what else demands attention.

Soon!

I've done a few triples and there is a lot of stuff available for them out there. I like working on them they are much easier than these bikes with all the cams and stuff.  ;D.
Check the slide alignment pins on the carbs and make sure they are secure. Last year at The Deals Gap 2T meet my buddy Russ had one back out on the #1 carb, the slide turn, jamming up on the idle screw and sending him down the road at a very uncomfortable speed  :o. We made a JB Weld repair but he never felt comfortable on that big bore 2T the last couple of days on the trip and switched to his back up DS bike, a DRZ 650.

OK then!

Headed out for a ride a little while ago and the bike dutifully tried to kill me because I installed one of the throttle slides wrong and so it was stuck full open. That was exciting! Fixed that and adjusted the throttle and enrichener cables and headed back out there again.

Here's a little fly-by for the benefit of the uninitiated. Sound and fury, 1975-style. Single disk brake.

Oh yeah.

It makes ungodly noises and it's idling too high. I need some sidecover grommets so I can install those, and then it's off to find a new home.
