regulator rectifier ricks motorsports or Oregon motorsports

Hi everyone,

I'm rebuilding my CB 750 and trying to replace anything that might give me trouble if I'm far away from home.  My regulator and rectifier looks like they have spent the last 40 years under water so I've been looking to replace upgrade them.  I can get a ricks motorsports regulator rectifier for $65 or an Oregon motorsports for $130. It sounds like the only pros for the Oregon motorsports are that you can adjust it and replace one part instead of two if something dies. What do you guys think?

Since I've never been able to predict the future....I went with the Ricks.  It was a price performance thing with me.  Whether you are replacing one part or two....if you are 70 or 700 miles from home, you're going to have to buy the whole banana anyway or pay for a really expensive tow back home.

Pros - Ricks, is cheaper
Cons - You must build a custom fitment for it, and swap two wires around if you go custom plugs

Pros - Oregon, plug and play, adjustable
Cons - more expensive

Yea I'm making a custom battery box and using a stock wiring kit so I should be good there. for what reason would I want to adjust the voltage?

Including the mounting of the unit?

You shouldnt need to adjust the Reg/Rec. ITs an option, as it was on some stock units, but I use a Ricks and never have needed to.

Yeah mounting it was a custom fit but wasn't difficult to do since it's an all in one

I found that Oregon's was cheaper when I bought their regulator and rectifier individually. They take up a little more space but ended up being cheaper than their combo unit or a Rick's unit.

Back to the original post....you can buy two Ricks for the price of one Oregon assy.....carry a spare in your jacket and all worries go away.

WOW Oergon's prices have hit through the roof. i bought one of there rectifiers a couple years back for $50. Is copper really that expensive?

I was asking my self this question and still haven't bought one because I can't decide. You guys are making it even more difficult now. Bike in question is a 77 550k. I like how the Oregon claims to charge at a lower rpm than stock. How much? Who knows, its still the stator that does most of the work, so I assume it can't get that much better. It shouldn't be a matter of money, but a matter of performance and reliability. So anyone have either of these that have been through the war and back?

Stock units have been thru' hundreds of thousands of 'wars' and back and working away after 40 yrs...would be my choice to keep with the stock reg/rect. and 'prolly less stress on the stator/field too ;)
