Gearshift installion? A little help
« on: April 14, 2015, 06:43:04 PM »
I pulled my Stator cover off for the 4th time to try and fix an oil leak and this time the gearshift spindle came up with the cover.

This is on a 74 XL250

I was hoping to seal it tomorrow but want to make sure I put it together right. The picture has a red arrow pointing to a bar coming of the spring around the spindle.  Do I need to push is down (under the rod that I put a green dot on) then in?

Want to make sure it is right. If I get it sealed I do not want to open it again.

guess I did not put a green dot on it.  It is just right of the right of the arrow and half covered by the bar coming from the spring.

I don't know the XL250 but based on experience with other Honda shift mechs I believe the two legs of that spring your arrow points to should be on either side of the pin sticking out of the crankshaft.

Of bigger concern to me is the roller arm at the upper left, it's clearly out of place.  That's the drum stopper, which causes the shift drum to stop in the proper positions during shifting.  To be that far out of place, I'm worried that it may be bent.

I would guess that I have it wrong. I can not seem to find a picture to try to match.

So you are saying you think the pin should be in between the two legs?

I suspect so.  Here's what the equivalent assembly looks like on a 750:

That picture should do.  Thank you very much.

I think when I put the pin between the two legs it will raise the roller arm up and put it in the right place.  I do not think it is bent.  It was shifting fine before and I did not put too much force on it when I was pulling the cover off.  Hopefully the fourth times the charm and I will have the cover back on and not leaking.

Hope its right.

It shifts fine from 1 to Neutral and then I have to turn the rear wheel slightly to get it to cycle through 2nd - 5th.  Downshifting is fine.

The "drum" (i think that is what it is called) turns slightly when the arm is moving down to the next gear.  This causes it to miss the gear.  If I slightly turn the rear wheel forward it holds the "drum" in place and cycles properly.

Note: Bike is lying on its side.  Tomorrow I will flip it up and check for leaks and go for a spin. Fingers crossed.

when the engine is not running, having to turn the rear wheel slightly in order to shift gears is very normal. Sounds like you may be all sorted out now, let us know how the test ride goes!

That is what it is doing so I am assuming it is right.

After getting it all back together, I let it run and it is leaking still.  A cold snowy day put off any test driving and I have been defeated by the oil leak so next week I am taking it up to a local shop to have them seal my stator case to be leak free.
