Topic: Cb500 Cam chain tensioner position? Pics and video

Hi all,

I have my motor all back together and I flipped it over to inspect underneath up in the trans area and found an interesting thing with the bottom of the cam chain tensioner. It looks like it is super close if not rubbing on the primary drive sprocket hub.

You can see in the pictures how close it is.

So my question, is it positioned correctly or is it supposed to be on the inner edge of the case.? Right now it looks like it is on the outer edge putting it too close to the hub

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The bottom of your tensioner missed it's holder on the lower case. You're going to need to get the tensioner out and reposition it. Bummer since you have to disturb the gaskets

Yup bummer, top end has to come off.

Don't feel bad. It's a common mistake.
You'll want pop it out and put it in correctly.

Doh!! I was afraid you guys would say that!

Does the whole top end have to come off or just the head cover?

If whole top end, are gaskets still usable? I sprayed with copper spray so I'm worried they're going to stick and tear apart

The whole shebang. The cylinder has to lifted some to locate the tensioner no matter how you do it. Good luck with gaskets be prepared to replace.

Hello friends,

Got the cam chain tensioner back in the correct position

But now I have another quick question. It seems the tensioner Bolt only wants to rotate about an 1/8th of a turn (clockwise) and I don't get that feeling of it pulling in the guide.  Feels like something is bound up. Before I reinstalled the cam the tensioner was working great and bolt was moving about a 1/4 turn like expected and pulling in guide smoothly

I also tried sneaking a screw driver down there to push the tensioner in and it seems to move fine.


Anyone got any ideas? Is this normal?

More does not mean better.
The bow of the tensioner is applying adequate tension to the chain with minimal adjustment.

Thanks Jimmy,  I guess thats good news.

I was just concerned that it wasn't pulling it in at all really??   But perhaps it is not able to once the chain is applying pressue on it.

I made the same mistake not too long ago on my build, after I re installed the tensioner correctly it had very little adjustment like you describe with yours.  Once you have the cam and cam sprocket installed if you adjust the tension with the valve cover off you'll see there's plenty of a adjustment in the tensioner.
