Frame corrosion, help !
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:50:46 AM »
I was just checking my frame over before I take it to be powder coated and spotted this on the right hand front down tube, looks like water has got in and corrosion has bulged out the outer tube (see photo). Has anyone one else had a similar problem and does anyone know of a cure ?

Cheers

My first thought is to have the fame "dip stripped" and then inspect the frame.  If the rusted areas are no longer welded together, you will have to refab those parts of the frame.  That is however, easier said than done without a frame jig.

Its been in an accident at some time and the frame was straightened. Get all the paint off first and take a closer look. If it was rust bulging you would be able to flex the section with your fingers(just press on it) clean it out best you can , beat it back to shape and seam weld if your worried.  If you look at right side of picture you can see where the stiffening piece/steering head was plug welded into position ( the roundish area)

I've owned it from new (1976 CB750F1) and it's never been dropped, have cleaned quite a bit of the rust out and the inner tube looks in good shape so will probably get them to blast it, hammer it back and then seam weld it, unless there are any better ideas out there ?

Thanks

Tube and fabric aircraft use boiled linseed oil in the tubing.....I know you can get it at home depot.

That split and plug weld look exactly like mine and I know it's not been wrecked either. I think beadblasting or dipping would address the problem.

Thanks for all the replies guys, guess I won't have to start searching on eBay for a replacement frame now ! Will be off to the paint shop tomorrow luckily they are also an engineering firm so should be able to do the repairs as well.

Thanks
