WWII Warbirds
« on: May 07, 2015, 03:30:17 AM »
How cool is to see a flying B-29?  Quite scary actually, you can hear it long time before you see it.

Got lucky yesterday, will spent lot of time watching the sky next few  days.

These big birds are quite the sight. We have a B-17 that is associated with The Yankee Air Museum just a few miles east at Willow Run Airport. There are frequent fly overs during the summer months and you really don't have to look up because they have such a distinctive engine sound. Of course you always look up though.  ;) You can actually book a ride but it's about $500 per head.

I always try to imagine a full sky of them, that must have been terrifying.

Used to go to air shows all the time and love ww2 planes. Been in the Flying Fortress but not the super fortress. Always liked the b24's too. P51's for fighters with their Merlin engines. I always wanted to fly in anyone of them.
Memphis Belle is a great movie with some good shots of the b-17 in action.

I was involved with the "American Air Power" museum on LI for a bit.

Just went to Dayton last week, but it is always nice to see them fly.

Nice. I got to "fly" a WWII school biplane last year, leather cap and all, felt like a kid.

From the title I thought this was going to be about aggressive buying of WWII memorabilia on eBay...

My former employer had a Christmas party in Udvar-Hazy center once.

http://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center/

And Andrews air force did air show to remember West Berlin air bridge - I saw La7 there and also walked under B-52, you can't understand how big is it till you see it in person. Hurricane, Spitfire. Memphis Belle was there too, if I remember correctly.

Blue Angles show on the end, it was an amazing event

Ultimately the mission failed, but the plan was audacious , getting a B29 airworthy  almost 50 years after it crash landed. Hats off for the courage and ingenuity.

Reminds me of this, a similar recovery. Always liked the P-38. I watched how the recovery played out, think it was PBS, but not sure.

If you love planes and warbirds then you must visit the EAA - Oshkosh, WI during the convention in July. It is an awesome gathering of every experimental and military aircraft you could find. I have been there many times and find it different every year. Check it out:

I was stationed at Eglin AFB, one of the few enjoyable parts of military life was watching the B-52s take of,  used to use almost the entire runway to get airborn,  wings were so long it seemed as though they were flapping in the breeze.  An awesome sight it was!

Would love to see a Lancaster flying but no chance down this way.
There is a Catalina FB and a Super Constellation down here that I have recently seen flying a couple of times and had the opportunity to check out inside them as well.

My brother worked on B50's, they were mostly a Hot Rodded B29 with huge Pratt and Whitney engines. They made refueler tankers out of them too and added a pair of jet to help them keep up while refueling fighter planes. The tankers were going flat out and the fighters had to fly as slow as they could. There are a couple youtube videos of them.

Kev

I remember that Nova episode and it was indeed a bold plan because they literally rebuilt that plane where it sat.

I have never seen the PBS story on the Kee Bird. Just finished watching...thanks for posting. What a great story with such a sad ending. They were so close, but the hurried attempt to fly it out of there proved costly.

I hear you ! I've seen it myself about 4 times, trying to spot the point in the project where they could have done something differently to ensure a better outcome. Easy to do from the comfort of an arm chair with a nice beer.
