76 cb550 electronic ignition conversion from cb650..
« on: May 08, 2015, 04:40:57 PM »
I've been researching how to swap out my point/cond. system with a cb650 electronic ignition. About the only guidance I could find (and where I got the idea in the first place) is a thread posted years ago, which doesn't provide wiring details and I had a few simple questions.
I've compared diagrams and it looks like there are single yellow and blue leads from the cb550 plate, while the cb650 has two yellow and two blue. Do I just combine them to be wired in a 4 into 2 configuration (yellows to yellow/blues to blue)?
Also, I have heard I will need to wire in an ignitor. If this is true, where does that fit in the system? Where is it wired in? Possibly something to do with the two additional leads yes?
Last thing, is there anything I need to do with the parts on the crankshaft (timing advance unit, etc.)?
I'm aware of the mechanical mods necessary to fit the new plate, and the points cover size upgrade.

Thank you

That's an interesting idea.  Let us know if you have success.  Most people upgrading a 550 to electronic ignition go with a Dyna-S, Dyna 2000 or Pamco.

I know that the CB650 is not compatible with a Dyna or Pamco -- only the CDI box made for it.

HondaMan ignition.

Easy to install, keeps the original points, and won't break the bank.

Bike kickstarts every time, 1st kick if warm, 1 or 2nd if cold.

It looks like it might take a set of spark units and an advancer to get the job done. The $ are adding up pretty quick, so might just stick the the old condenser/points config.

It runs well enough and starts on the first kick every time. Would still like to see if it can be pulled off by a humble wrencher such as myself. It's been done before.

Alright, for those who'd like to know, I have done some research and put together a basic schematic for wiring in the ignition. First, these are the parts you will need.

cb650 pulse generator, early 1980s (cheapest I could find was 20- ebay)
cb650 spark units/ignitors x 2 (cheapest was 20 each- ebay.. so 40)
spark advancer unit (quite a few out there for around 15-20- ebay)

So you're looking at a total of about 75-80 not counting any hardware needed to mount the 650 plate, which looks like it will take some simple but clever engineering.

The wiring diagram is pretty simple, actually. You will need to run some additional wiring most likely to get everything connected, but not too serious (sorry for the sloppy handwriting, you should get the idea tho).

Thoughts?
