Strange clutch wear
« on: May 09, 2015, 09:55:15 AM »
I'm checking everything about before attempting to start my CB550, dropped the oil pan to find some small aluminum shavings

Pulled the clutch cover and found this very strange wear around the edge of the clutch basket.

Only suspect item I can find is the adjustment bolt that goes through the clutch cover. Looks a little mangled? Maybe it was adjusted too far in at some point and rubbed on the basket?

This is a new to me engine and I have not had it running, so unfortunately no background. The oil I drained was fresh, hadn't been run through the engine, just used to keep things lubed.

Any ideas?

I would measure from the centre (throwout point) to the bolt and see if it would interfere with the edge of the basket, it looks like it might but it is mostly past the inside of the clutch clearance in the case.
Should that bolt have a (missing) washer on the other side?
I don't think there's anything else that could hit the basket but I'm not looking at the engine.
