'74 CL200 Exhaust Measurement Question
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:00:13 AM »
Hey everyone, a friend wants me to fix his really rusted out CL200 muffler. Anyone have one they can snap a few pictures of? What I really need is the length and diameter of the tip that comes out of the muffler. It's not going to look perfectly stock, but I want it to look close. The chrome heat shield will help hide any weird welding at least.

I would guess that the diameter is the same as the pipe going in, at least it's that way on the CL450.  You'll be hard pressed to find anything to weld to is my guess.

I have a small stainless patch on one of mine but it's not like the back 1/4 is replaced like you'd have there.

I have looked at things that might be suitable replacement and cans of a modern monkey bike or larger might work. I'd suggest  find one at Barber, I saw a bunch of that particular size while looking for other stuff last year.

Barber, as in the vintage festival in Alabama? Kind of a trek for me in CT, haha. Do they sell online too? But yeah, I hear you. It's pretty rusted out. I have some 18ga steel that I'm going to attempt to shape with a sandbag/mallet and English wheel. Trying to replace the entire rusted out part instead of patching it. Worst case my friend will get a new muffler, so it's not like the entire thing is toast.

Thanks man

This should work..
Get a 4x4 cut out the shape of the outside of the muffler..or a 6x6
Get soft steel..drawing steel if you can get it..screw the sheet down to the wood with many screws..
Now start pounding and stretching the metal into the wood piece...when it's good mark the flange and trim off the excess..should look like stock..

Hmm, interesting. I really like that idea. I'll give that a shot for sure. Thanks!

Not sure this is going to work. Before I made the end part I wanted to patch those two holes first. I cut them out to one hole so I could get to clean thicker steel. Made a small panel and am welding it now. The whole muffler is just falling apart. So thin and rusted. He might just have to replace the muffler with an aftermarket one since these don't exist anymore. Oh well, thanks for the help anyway guys.
