Topic: Brake Caliper Holder ?

I've been trying to do as much research as I can to mount a front dual disc brake set-up on my 75' CB750 K5. From all the pictures that I have been able to pull up and various posts I've read, it appears that people are using the same stock brake set-up on the left ( caliper, holder, and brake disc ) and mounting it on the right? If that's the case then basically all I need is to find a good used set off a K0 thru K6 ? It looks confusing to me but how you would mount this on the right?

You need a K3 thru K6 set; the earlier brackets won't mount to your K5 fork legs.

Thanks Scottly, I wish I could see a close up picture of how a Left side caliper mount and caliper looks mounted on the right? I can visualize how you can reverse the caliper but the mounting bracket confuses me?

The mount is universal. The two halves of the caliper just get turned around on the mount. The calipers sandwich the mount.
Piston side of the caliper on the outside of the mount, away from the wheel.

You also want to swap the bleeder for the brake line on the caliper.  Threads are the same, only the bleeder hole has pressed in seat for the bleeder to seal against.  The seat can be removed using shortened nail and pliers.

The speedo drive has to be adapted too.

Are you sure about this? I believe the bleeder and the brake line are different diameters on my K bike. The only time I think I have ever heard of this is when using the right caliper on the left (or vise-versa) on the front of a 77/78 F bike....

Yes, Wilbur, I am sure about that. 

On both calipers I used for my dual setup I pulled the seat out, chased/cleaned threads using M10x1.25 tap and put bleeders to the front hole and banjo bolts to the rear hole on each caliper.

70CB750 and others,  Can you elaborate how the speedo drive is adapted to work? Or are you Guys using a different speedo drive? If your able to furnish pictures, that would be greatly appreciated !

There is several ways to do the speedo drive..
 While the brake bracket does bolt on to the fork, i have used shims about 3-4 mm Approximately. To help line up caliper to disc.

You can change the steel piece and it will work



or you can make a new one from aluminum, somebody had some for sale here while ago.

70CB750,  Is that a picture of the Speedo Gear ( Drive ) Retainer?  I'm assuming that the one pictured on the right, is the one that has had it's outer lip grounded down flush and 2 outside tabs removed?  It looks like the 2 short tabs were made out of the outer lip before it was completely ground down?

You mentioned that there are other years and models of other CB's that have the right retainer that is flush without the lip and tabs? Where would I look for one like that? Didn't see any on ebay.

After referring to the parts fiche I see that the early "K" calipers do indeed have a front/rear orientation of the bleeder/banjo. I am used to looking at the later K7/K8 (or any "F" model) where the bleeder and brake line connections are beside each other.

Damn my affinity for the newer models!

Yes, that's an adapted retainer.

There was an urban legend while ago that 550 speedo adapter works on 750, but somebody here proved it wrong, as far as I remember.

Forum member made few aluminum adapters on a lather and had them for sale here, basically like the adapted retainer only made from a piece of 6061.

If you want another retainer to experiment with, you can have mine for the postage.

So the deal is, you need to make the speedo gear work with those two slivers you can see between the hub and the brake disc.

This is my spare wheel and disc that will eventually be used on a sidecar; no I did not take apart my bike for show and tell

Here is a picture of the original solution, the two tabs are held to the wheel by a retaining ring, but for the disc on the right side, it has to be cut smaller to fit inside the brake disc leaving enough metal on two sides to bent and file to fit those two openings from previous post.

Now in my box of leftovers I found this piece I made few years ago from chunk of 6061.  I made two, used one for my dual disc setup and this one was a spare I never finished.

So yesterday  I cut it to fit the wheel like this.  All it needs is to file the grove in the top to fit the speedo gear box and you are good to go.  I don't have a spare gear box and it is better to file it to fit, IMHO.

Your choice, if you want the steel piece and adapt it for your application, you can have it for the postage.

The adapter I made, I believe $30 is fair price.
