« on: May 24, 2015, 07:04:04 AM »
years ago when i bought my bike,71 750,the carbs were rebuilt by a friend of mine and he installed those black fiber type floats, these floats are a bit wide and over the years have given me fits with interfering with my bowl gaskets.are there any slimmer types of floats i can use?thanks

Black ones better than the brass ones, brass part is now replaced with synthetic float.  It's a good thing you mentioned you have a 750 cause I know probably what the problem is.

Your buddy probably looked at the floats you have now and figured they were a match, they certainly do at first glance.  However, what I suspect is that he actually replaced your 750 floats with 500/550 floats, which are slightly WIDER.  Hence why you are probably rubbing where you shouldn't be.

I have had black floats in a K1 for a long time after chucking the leaky brass and never had a problem. Are you using an aftermarket gasket that may be swelling or not fitting correctly ?

Any way to tell, James? Measurements that can be taken?

I can tell by looking at them real close.  But if I'm not sure I have verified floats of each to compare and I can know for sure where it came from.

Here is a a 750 float (top) and a 500/550 float (bottom).

They are lined up on the left, the second shot shows the total width difference.  It's about 53mm vs 55.5mm, respectively.

Additionally, they are also different part numbers.

Ek,i really dont remember where the gaskets came from but i can say the floats were replaced because the brass ones were toast
