Running on 2 cylinders
« on: May 28, 2015, 03:35:21 PM »
I finally got my 78 750K running today after the PO let it sit for about 8 years.

Once I got the carbs back on I didn't notice any gas leaking from the bowls but I had a good bit of gas drain out of the tubes under the airbox right in front of the back tire.

After a few tries I got it running (roughly) but the 3rd and 4th cylinders weren't running.

Would this be a problem with my accelerator pump? I know for sure the tubes connecting it were cleaned and the carb was super clean and ready to go when I installed it aside from it needing a vacuum sync.

Thanks for reading!

I just went back out to take another look.

The #4 carb had gas in it so I'm assuming that means the 3rd would as well.

When I turned the gas on it puked it out the back again kinda underneath and behind the airbox.

When I went to see if it would start the battery was completely dead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and since I'm a chef as payment for your help if you're ever traveling through Madison WI. I would gladly prepare you a meal at an awesome restaurant!

Fix the obvious problem first. The carbs are overflowing so start there. You say "super clean" but did you replace any parts? You either have one or more float valves sticking, or the float height adjustment(s) are off. If you did not replace any parts, then I highly recommend replacing the float needles. They have a little spring behind the button that rests on the float and this little mechanism tends to gum up over time. Also the rubber tips tend to harden with age and don't seal as well. There are kits available that have just the float needles and bowl gaskets. I have had to do this to my K8 to correct overflowing carbs. Did I mention that I highly recommend it?  ;)

Don't forget to check the float "droop" after setting the float height.

While you're at it, order some new spark plugs and check the resistance of all four plug caps. They should all be less than 10K ohms and they should all be within 1K ohms of each other.  8)

Thanks for the reply.

My plan of attack for tomorrow was to first check what kind of spark I'm getting since I have new plugs in it. I was wondering if since it took me a few tries to get it running that I might've fouled a plug.

I had a rough time trying to get the float heights set correctly so I'll look into that as well.

Thanks again!

if it is spark related, one coil should operate cylinder 1 and 4 and the other coil will work 2 and 3. Welcome to the site and another Wisconsinite here.

That's what I read today so I'm guessing it has something to do with the carb since it's the 3rd and 4th cylinders.
