71 CB750 K1 - Tacho cable Leaking Oil
« on: June 01, 2015, 02:25:38 AM »
Hello,

I am trying to get some info or a drawing on how the tacho cable end fitting goes to the top of the engine - is there an oring to help seal the fitting off when the screw holding the cable end in place is done up? When idling, you can see the outer cable fitting moving or jerking while held in place and oil is leaking past the fitting. I can't find a detailed exploded drawing of how this all fits in place to see if anything is missing - any ideas or a link with some info would be much appreciated. Cheers.

There is a seal in the bottom of that hole where the tacho cable is fitted. That seal can be removed if using a slim hook like dentists use, grip the seal from the center hole and pull it out. I saw that on a video on Youtube.
Do NOT use a screwdriver and bend form the sides of the seal. Risk that the alu behind the seal crack and fall into the top end, between 3 and 4. Don't ask me how I know that :)
If the bike has no fram modification the engine has to be pulled out from frame to lift the valve cover.

Important to not press too hard when mounting the seal, it will collapse. Order minimum 2 seals so you have one replacement when you have destroyed the first one.
I added some additional non hardening sealer around the rubber seal when mounting it just for sure. No leaks.

Just replaced one this winter--eezzy peezzy -  and cost just a few bucks for an OEM from my Honda dealer. A little slop in that fitting is normal.
