New guy on the block
« on: June 15, 2015, 01:42:37 AM »
Hi guys I am new to the seen
Let Me start out by saying I find the forum very interesting and helpful as well as
A bit concerning when coming to fault finding cause no matter what you look for
It is always the worst outcome that comes to light first ,
A year or so ago I bought a 1977 CB 550 k3  as a non runner ad all looked in good Nick
Engine was turning over by hand and almost everything was there . I did find a couple of thing wrong and missing as I started cleaning eg. No stator coil  rectifiers red wire was broken carbs was all dirty and seized up resistor caps on two of the cylinders was blown and now my latest find while changing the points plate is that the advance timing unit does not have the two pins that has to got into the big nut on the plate side( hope that sounds clear enough)   .I have so far got a new battery in cleaned the carb changed the brass ,well actually I stripped the whole bike, done all wheel bearing ,powder coated ,new bt 45 tyres on rims ,probably should have started it first but I was so confident it will start up first time ,am this far and have put it all together again and tried to start it a week ago so it looks like a firing /timing problem might be the atu any inputs will be greatly appreciated .It is also my first time doing this type of project only me the forum and a Hayes manual

Welcome. Start a thread in SOHC Bikes or Projects to get your troubleshooting done. You'll get far more eyes and ears assisting you there.

When you post, provide your model and year in the title as this helps a great deal.for instance, your title could be: '77 550 starting woes after rebuild

A bit Erie entail on your starting problem would help too. Does it crank, but not fire? Does it seem like it's not getting fuel, or weak spark? Is it backfiring while starting?

When you describe your problem, be as detailed as possible about the exact setup of your bike: coils stock? Which spark plugs? Points condensers new? Points gap checked? Carbs fully cleaned and floats set? What jets? Stock air box? Stock exhaust?

You'll get tons of questions if you don't list these details because people will want to help, but need more info to help you accurately.

So gather up your answers to these questions, open your new thread, and let's get your bike running!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

Hi Stephen.

You might like to pop in to www.sohc.co.uk and chat to the UK guys.  There's bound to be someone close by!

Use the same name so that we recognise you.
