77 supersport air box

Just finished replacing floats and float valves in an f2. Reinstalled the carbs and then the air box. That is when the trouble began. I have done this a number of times but this time I could not get the velocity stack rubbers to go over the carb intakes. They would either not go fully on or one end would pop off while I was trying to get the other to fully seat. I have never had so much trouble with this air box. I finally removed the velocity stacks and installed them without the box and then squeezed the box in behind and folded the stacks into the openings in the box. I still can't believe I had such difficulty doing something that I've done a dozen times before with nowhere near the  amount of time, cursing, etc. I am wondering if I should consider something like pods, although I don't want to get into jetting and all that. Just wondering if anyone else has had a lot of trouble with one of these air boxes.

Did you attempt to install just the top half of the airbox first?  Give that a try.  Airboxes are easy.

I can assure you that you are not alone! I just had to reset float levels and replace throttle cables on my '78 550K and fought with the intake boots for over an hour.  Lots of silicone with teflon lube finally helped to get the boots fully seated around the airbox rims working with one hand inside the airbox and the other outside.  A whole new language was invented and the next ten generations of Honda Design Engineers are now cursed for this obnoxious system.  >:(

sounds like you need new boots ;)

what helps alot if they are getting hard is to heat them up with a heat gun till they get soft, they'll pop in in 2 minutes...
Also Flybox suggest, split the box and mount top half first, gives you some more room to twist and turn ;)

I used silicone, I split the box, I heated the rubber with my heat gun, nothing worked until I took the stacks out of the top half and mounted them individually. then forced them back into the box. Where can you get new stacks?

well I always mount the rubbers on the carbs first. then put the box on them and push them in with my fingers/screwdriver...

It certainly helps when your clamps are not out of round.
Loostened completely, mine slide right on.
