Its the age old battle.......being one who has ridden a Goldwing, Voyager, and an Ultra as they were intended. I would take the HD EVERY time. For long distance there is nothing more comfortable than an Ultra IMO, and the new Rushmore HD's are greatly improved over there previous models in every way.

Don't get me wrong they all have there merits. The Goldwing is the ultimate tech tourer, and the Voyager (the old inline 4) was fast and nimble, and I LOVE my SOHC. I have put over 200K on an HD touring bike and I can ride 500+ miles a day without issues and I could not sit the others for that distance.

Canary I don't know what you have ridden..
 My point was some people speak badly about things that they never really experienced..because they don't like them....... 

 What I don't like. About a lot of touring bikes is the vast amount of stuff on them..
I for a time rode a R100 RT.. That could do easy thousand miles days.... Yet the seat looked much like and streetbike seat on a UJM......lot of overkill on touring rigs..but to each their own... The market is there, they just supply it.

Ahem, BMW R1200RT, K1600LT spring directly to mind in this category. While I don't prefer the styling of many Harley's, or the sartorial accoutrements, I do enjoy their motor when implanted in a nimble frame. A very visceral riding experience to me. Kind of like a 2-stroke wound out to 12,000 RPMs screaming into the twisties with your hair on fire, your grind stretched round back of your head, and your bum so tight the seat cover is torn free when you dismount. That to me, is the essence of riding and it's not restricted from HD, or limited to Japanese metrics. Plenty of phenomenal bikes through the ages from nearly every manufacturer.

I think there is more to the hds than that,what they did is make them appeal to a wider customer base,ie husband and wife retired and travelling as many do,and people who thought they were only for the rugged individual,I am certainly not the rugged type,but the torque of this old design is what I personally like.some people change their personalitys when they get one but I think they are just another form of bike.bill

I'm sure there are other bikes out there, but I can only comment on what I have ridden. The BMW's may be great bikes, but I have never ridden one and probably never will. The interactions that I have had with there riders have not been stellar. To me they all seem to look down there nose at any other brand and make it apparent.

  Son and girlriend on the 750 and me on the Harley for a week "up north". Here's a shot at Sleeping Bear Dunes. My wife and I loved riding it and am very grateful one is in my shop full time. Thank-you to my Buddy for giving me access to it. Try one you'll love it !!

I can ride my F2 solo all day long but 2 up on it doesn't work for me either even when I had a more comfortable his/hers seat on it (more comfortable for my wife that is). The bike had the power for 2 up but not the comfort but that's where my 83 Goldwing comes in, the good news is that once the GL was roadworthy I was then able to toss the buttugly his/hers seat and put the factory F2 seat back on which is actually more comfortable for me.
