Selector drum problem

I am in the middle of an engine rebuild on a K4 CB750. I have the selector drum at a point where it should just slide out, the neutral bolt and ball have been removed and I really cant see anything else that would be holding the drum in place, but it doesn't want to slide out. It will travel freely 3 or 4 mm in either direction but then feels and sounds like it is coming to a stop on something else that is locating it. Any suggestions would be appreciated, this one has got me stumped. Thanks

Are the shift forks out? is the neutral switch all the way out?
Is the shift spindle mechanism off?
The group on the right side of this picture.

Have you removed the transmission shaft(bearing) holder?
its #2 in this drawing.

Yes, cases are split. Neutral switch, selector forks and spindle all out
