Topic: Irreplaceable item question: Original Title.

As some of you know, I recently came into a '76 750F.  It is totally original and wasn't ridden much.  I am about to get it titled in my name, but as you know, part of the process is surrendering the old title.  Normally, I'm ok with this, but it's the original title that was issued back in 1976.  I just think it's way cool to have a direct link to the past of the machine.   

For all I know the DMV will probably shred it. 

I've already photocopied it, but is there anything I can do to, hell I don't know, keep it?  I might show the bike and I think it'd be cool to have the original title on a placard with the other bike info.

Did you double check with DMV? There are no exceptions? Can they just stamp something on it to invalidate it and let you keep it?

I'll call 'em, but I have my doubts.  They can be nice, but they can be rather "Soup Nazi" (to reference Seinfeld), when asked to bend rules.

Ever wanted to keep an old driver's license?  Just go in without it, tell 'em you lost it and go through the paperwork hassle.  Not that I've ever done that...   

Same concept.  You'll have to play the ole' "lost title" game, but you'll get to keep the original.  Not fun, but can be done.  Think of it this way, what would you do if you really did misplace the title?  Then, in a few months, what if you came across it?  Same end result.  New title with your name.  Original title that has no cash value, but tons of sentimental value.

Do it.  It'll be a pain, but once it's over, you'll be glad you did it.  Better a short-term hassle than years of kicking yourself...

But it will cost you 75 bucks. How about doing a photocopy and going to a notary public to proof "exactness" of the copy. Then, wait a couple weeks and go to the DMV with the photocopy. When they ask you about it, say you did it in case you lose the title, "that seems I have just done"...


In Spain it's legal to carry notarized copies of the original documents. Nobody do it, because the notarized document is more expensive than a copy of the title issued by the DMV. So in case my documents gets lost or stolen, I just order a copy. For what is worth, the title is worthless as long as the records are computerized. You don't need the title to transfer a vehicle; just proof of identity of seller.

In New York State, $75 is a small price to pay to minimize your involvement with the DMV.  That's the route I'm gonna take when it's time to put my 175 on the road.  I'd rather chew off my arm than go through the nightmare of fighting the DMV; clean and simple, in & out.

If you have a nice 1200 dpi scanner you can scan the bugger in full color both sides and then print it to a (I Think it is) 10lb paper. But you will have to check this.

In Ohio, even the old titles have a water mark to prevent forgery.  Can't get a replacement unless it's in your name. The old bags at our title office were called "Title Nazis" even before Seinfeld. Would probably strip search if you brought a photocopy.

I did not mean to "forge" one to turn one in. Just make one for your show purposes. Watermark means nothing in photoshop.

There has to be a place nearby that can professionally duplicate it for display purposes.
