Speedometer Drive Gear Service ?
« on: August 20, 2015, 04:05:50 AM »
Finally able to remove the speedometer cable retaining screw for the speedometer drive gear housing. Let it soak with Kroil oil and purchase left hand drill bits.

Now that I removed the cable, does the housing of the speedometer drive gear able to be opened to service the speedo gear ? The speedo gear works fine before I pulled everything apart ( replaced tires and polished fork tubes ).

The drive gear doesn't appear to leak any oil if there is a seal where the square tab meets the speedometer cable. That tab moves freely which I assume turns the speedo gear. The speedo housing does appear to have a small set screw on top of the casting at the end where the cable goes through, so thought that may be removable to add oil or service ?

Any thoughts on this subject before to put everything back together.

And another question, how does this speedometer drive gear work ? There is a steel bushing in the center of it ( appears to pressed in ) where the axle runs thru, but it doesn't turn. Only the  square tab inside the housing that engages the cable does. Worked before but was just curious how it worked ?

The tab that protrudes towards the hub locks into the a key way on the wheel side and spins in tandem with the front tire. This turns the cable interior, which spins the gears in the gauge. Not always the most accurate, but pretty reliable if all parts are within decent service

I had a screaming CB750 K6 speedometer.
removed it from bike, upside down and gave it squirts of thin oil thru the speedo cable connection.
Let it soak upside down 1 night and mounted it next day. Screaming solved.

It's tough to thoroughly clean without taking it apart.  I had no choice since I wanted to save the original and mine was locked up tight.

Thanks for posting that link.  The speedo drive for my CB750 project looked pretty ratty and need to be repainted.  After taking it apart I needed to replace the large seal, as mentioned in the above linked thread.  I found a 34 x 48 x 7 seal on EBay.  Exactly what I was looking for.
