Bird strike assessment is still part of FAR 25 certification of Transport catagory Aircraft

Government regulatory organizations have reacted to the wildlife-strike problem by promoting airworthiness standards that address the ability of aircraft to safely withstand bird strikes—particularly during the critical flight phases of takeoff and climb, and approach and landing. The following list presents organizations responsible for these standards, as well as names of the regulations they enact:

United States Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
Canada Transport Canada Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs)
Europe The Joint Aviation Authorities Joint Aviation Regulations (JARs)

Mass of Ingested Birds Number of Ingested Birds Bird Impact Requirements
3-ounces Maximum of 16 birds in rapid succession Impacts may not cause more than 25% power or thrust loss, require engine to be shut down within 5 minutes, or result in a hazardous situation
1.5 pound Maximum of 8 birds in rapid succession Impacts may not cause more than 25% power or thrust loss, require engine to be shut down within 5 minutes, or result in a hazardous situation
4 pound 1 Engine is not to catch fire, burst, or lose the capability to be shut down

I like the last one which would approximate a chicken.

Bet that was more than you wanted to know..................

do they teach pilots how to gage a birds weight at the speeds you are going, or is there a bird counter/scale in front of the engine

No we just know if we hit it or not .....

And if the engine or windshield withstands the strike and continues to function.

They do autoposies of the remains believe it or not

Really?

That is interresting,

can they get an animal psychic in to see if the birds were suicidal and what drove the birds to fly into the engines?

by learning this maybe we can deter birds from Avian Depression in the future

It would have to be Rolls Royce who built chicken gun, everyone knows British people drink warm beer because Lucas made refrigerators ;D

You go away from a post for a while and when you come back it's gone totally to the bow wows.....

For once and for all can we stop perpetuating this myth that Brits drink warm beer. It is served at cellar temperature which is just a few degrees above freezing. North American beer has to have its nuts frozen off so that the drinkers taste buds are numbed to the fact that they are actually drinking cold filtered cats piss.

There, I said it.

PS I actually like some N.American (especially Canadian) brews.
