How exactly do you teach abstinence though?

As far as I know its the same for all taper roller bearings where loose ball bearings were standard.
Its not a big deal, I make some 5mm spacer washers for mine out of alloy tube, shines up nice. I'll take a pic and post it when I get home(if I can find out how!)

I can't believe these K8 guys  would admit that they actually did something to IMPROVE their bike.  I thought (according to them) that a K8 couldn't be improved upon. :o ::) ;D

I am sure the orig standard bearing felt as good when new I was just to cheap to get the oem part.  I may swith back now that you brought that up.  Damn I am back on this board after 2 months and someone is ragging my ride already.   HAHA 
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Heres a pic of spacer washer. you can also see the braided lines I made and the stainless pinch bolts, I taper turned the heads (trained as precision machinist, down to 6 micron total tolerance, single point machining, for those who know what that means) The paint isnt as bad as it looks, had to degrade image to be able to post it.

I recently bought an "All Balls" tpaered steering head bearing kit for my 77 CB550K and was wondering if anyone has installed this kit on their model and if so.... which thickness shim (if any) was best suited to properly seat the bearings in the headset?   It apperars to be a one size fits all application with the inclusion of the shims......Thanks  Tim

I put an All Balls tapered bearing set on my CB500.  I suspect the head design is similar to the CB 550.  The first time I did it I thought the shim was to be used to assist driving the lower bearing onto the shaft.  To my dismay, the lower triple tree contacted the frame in the area of the fork lock.  I got a second bearing set ( hard to remover without damage) and used the shim which was about 3mm thick between the lower triple tree and the bearing.  All went together well and has worked fine.  Really great to get rid of the ball bearing detentes which develop over time with the OEM bearings.

Lower Tapered Steering Bearing

I have educated myself on previous posts but have a question. I am installing tapered bearings on my '70 750. The new races are in. Washer is on stem and seal is on top of it. Should the new bearing slip on (mine will not)  or will it have to be pressed on? If so what is the best/proper way to do that?

Bearings are the Japanese version that I purchased from Parts-N-More.

Gentle tap on, not slide but not tight press either
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

On later models which came with taper rollers stock, Honda recomends torquing to 36ft/lbs to seat bearingsthen adjusting by hand to get smooth operation

Well, I did a search on this topic but still a little confused on what I need to remove before installing the new bearings.

Do both metal pieces shown below in top stem view and bottom stem view need to come out or just the outermost piece(bearing race?).

Here are the pics....

top of stem....


bottom of stem....


If both need to come out do I just pound out with hammer and a wood/metal dowel?

Use a brass drift and a hammer (one pop on each side at a time) and they'll pop right out.

Those are the ones I have as well.   I am just prepping the frame for powder coating now so will not be installing them until that has been done.

Not quite sure what the washer/spacer does?  Does it go in the bottom above the actual bearing?

Assume these parts on the bottom of the steering stem must go as well?   Any hints for getting these off.   Not much there to hit with a rod and hammer and then can only get to one side.   It is on tight!
