You have to tap side to side or you will twist the race and jam it on the stem

I bought an all balls tapered steering bearing kit for my 1974 cb750 and the top bearing cup is all the way seated against the lip but comes past the edge of the neck (see photo) is this normal or did they send me the wrong kit???

If you use standard headlamp 'ears' you have to make a couple of 5mm spacers for fork tubes or they rattle around.
(you don't need to ask how I know)
I think I have a couple of spare ones for 35mm forks

Hi there...I see that Hondaman has posted some info on this

<The Timken bearing numbers are:
Lower: 07100
Upper: L45449
The lower washer is: O.D.: 1.750", I.D.: 1.245" (1.250" will do nicely, too). Thickness can range from 0.100" to 0.125" .
The upper washer is: O.D.: 1.500", I.D.: 1.000" to 1.020". The thickness can range from 0.040" to 0.060" and it will fit.

The Timken numbers I have are circa 1972, just removed from my bike. If they have changed, and I can find the new numbers, I will edit this post later. I will be trying to locate some of these bearings, because I just had to install one of those "green kits" in mine, if only to get it back on the road before Fall... 



Does anyone have the complete numbers...including the cups? Is that what he is calling the upper and lower washers?

There's a ginormous thread somewhere detailing this-  Last I remember, the Timken product #s don't fit anymore.  Hondaman was working on machining them to fit-  you might check with him.

I would up going with an All-Balls kit which seems to be working just fine.

Thanks for your help....one more thing though....I have searched ebay and Dennis Kirk and others and can't seem to find a part # for an early 750K bike. (69-76) Any help out there?

I've got a set of tapered bearings from David Silver for my UK '79 CB650 and by the looks of it I use a thick ring at the base but not the old rubber seal. Does that sound right?

The stack height of the new set-up is very close to the old set up when the rubber seal and thin rign are fitted. If I run without a seal won't I get a load of dirt and water up into the lower bearing? See below...

I use the same bearings from the same place.

If you think about it, the bottom bearing assembly all slopes down and outwards, there's no place for water to sit.

Just use the spacer and yes muck will get in there BUT as the bearing never does a complete revolution it cant get tracked round and you will be removing the trees again for some other reason long before the bearings are damaged

Just had a response from David Silver, apparently they do a seal for this at 40pence! You'd think they'd stick it in with the kit when it's a £23 kit.

I purchased the All Ball Racing tapered roller bearing kit from Z1 Enterprise and it included 2 seals,
2 washers of different thicknesses and the bearings.

If you don't run with the lower seal you will cook your bearing in a short amount of time.
That is unless you don't ride your bike.
It doesn't matter if the bearings are rotating 360 degrees or just 10.
After all, you are probably changing to tapered rollers to rid your bike of the ball set-up index steering.
You never see a motorcycle parked outside of a psychiatrist's office!

I ordered the kit from Parts n more. got it. I know the spacer goes on the bottom of the tripple per the one lone pic I found searching for this topic. According to that pic there is no dust seal on the bottom anymore. I know I destroyed my bottom dust seal getting the old bearing race off.

Do I need to order a new seal setup or do without. What have you all done that used the parts n more kit?

I know there are some who have purchased this kit. Just need some input on the seal on the bottom of the tripple tree.

I've read at least one post which claims that the seal is unnecessary. I'm no bearing expert, but why tempt fate? If your stock seal got destroyed during disassembly (I know mine did) I think it would be pretty easy to make your own out of rubber or neoprene cut a little "proud" on both inside and outside dimensions so that it gets a decent seal.

FYI: I used the All Balls kit wihich came with a steel-backed rubber seal that snapped into the bearing for a really nice fit.

have installed this kit and i don't worry about dirt/crud moving up into the lower bearing because spacer was a close enuff fit that the gap around the spacer to let stuff in is pretty small , and i fully packed grease into the area in case i was wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. No matter how I look at the assembly I don't see how I could put a seal in there. Even the stock one would not work as the bearing race would not sit on solid metal.

Hey all I installed the kit dont remember  brand but left the seal down there  (it survived the removal of the race) well closed everything up  BUT before I closed it all I drilled and tapped and installed a grease fitting into the goose neck just behind the vin number  (73 750 K0 HAVE FUN  have fun seven fifty four ever Craig in Maine

ok guys,lets not worry too  much here,its a neck bearing,whats it turn,180 degrees at the most and there is no frictional load on it.i dont think you will ever wear it out anyway.

has anyone put the tappered steering bearings in a 71k cb750 and if so where did you get them and how are they working for you.  i went to denniskirk and they dont have them listed for the 71 js didnty have them for the 71 on the chart eithe.  it lists the ki but say years 76-78.  thanks again.
