with the ignition on, nothing happens, no lights, nothing... but, when i press the starter !, everything comes on, as if the starter button was the ignition key !
anybody got any ideas on how to fix ?

Try pulling the ignition switch and taking it apart to clean and grease it.  It may be corroded and after hitting the button, it makes enough contact to keep working.

Does it stay running after you release the starter button?

think it may be the ignition switch, i have a spare switch so i can test through the headlight bucket. thank you, makes perfect sense as a process of elimination

the bike never starts!!, or turns over. pressing the button merely turns the ignition on
