CB 550 1976 Cylinder-piston question

Hello,
I have an important question. (for me)
I'm starting to install the block of cylinders and see it is not completely smooth.
It is normal? :o

it appears that at least one of the cylinder sleeves is not fully seated into the block. That is a problem. Did you remove the sleeves or otherwise alter their fitment? If the deck surface is not completely flat, you will have oil leaks, and potentially other issues.

One of the sleeves is not completely seated into the cylinder block.  That is no bueno.  You will need to get it fully set into the block.

Do you know why those two sleeves are not seated? Is there damage to the sleeve bottoms? This didn't happen by itself.

The best way to install sleeves is with heat. Preheat your BBQ to 350-400 degrees, then install the cylinder and support the base. The aluminum will expand more quickly and the cast sleeves will drop in place. After 10 minutes if it hasn't happened, gingerly tap around the top of the sleeve with a soft hammer. Don't hit the sleeve edge or it might break the flange. If they don't move leave them longer. If they're not "cocked" they really should drop by themselves.

It's really strange that this one slipped out of place.  It seems like this happened when the cylinder was heated and apart from the rest of the motor, since the head would have otherwise prevented it from moving upward.   :-\

If you use the BBQ Grille method suggested by bwaller, remember to support the cylinder block when you heat it and not let the chamfered sleeves rest on the grille surface.  You can use two bricks to rest the cylinder on each side just outside of the sleeve area.

Seriously though, good advice from Brent and the bricks are needed.
Henry Abes 605 kit came with new liners for the cb500, 550 didn't need it to use the kit.

Good luck,  a liner dropping lower can kill a rebuild as well.Happens when liners aren't properly seated and shop skims the liners rather than fixing correctly.  Actually have seen that.
