550 cam timing mark
« on: October 18, 2015, 02:42:19 PM »
I am timing my cam and supposedly the notch is missing, or is it one of the marks in the following pics.

Cam sprocket only has a 25 stamped, and some casting lines that are barely visible.

End of camshaft has a big mark which seems unprecise to make the timing with.

Any thought is greatly appreaciated, thanks!

Well, your second image shows the notch rather clearly. If this is your cam (not an image of a different one) I don't see your problem. Engine at TDC 1-4, cam notch as described in the service manual (I think it's correct as pictured), work the chain over the sprocket until the bolt holes line up.

Take a picture straight on at the end of the camshaft, it almost looks like you could be off a tooth from the camera angle assuming you're at TDC.

But yeah, what Bodi said. Make sure engine is at TDC 1-4 and the notch is pointing straight foward parallel to the ground.

So finaly some good news -the epic first startup, though did i misplace the sparkplug wires so it starts to run on two, unfortunately.. Still, after building oil preassure, it fires on the first kick. You can hear an excited umph. Haha

And on all four a moment after, and with just the header - no muffler
