silly speedo gauge

the speedo gauge is well hard to gauge. the gauge will read low then winds up like a clock and starts reading too high. I have lubed the cable and ensured everything in on snug but no luck. i can estimate my speed pretty well and know that the bike isn't reading very close to accurately. also the gauges tend to bounce a lot which also makes reading them difficult. any suggestions are appreciated...

Possibly the innards of the clock need a tune up. See here for a how-to strip your clocks:

how does your tach cable look? If its old (ie, original) it might benefit from a replacement, might be worth trying anyway before tearing into the gauge itself....
