I am starting to winterize my bike and noticed that my muffler has a bit of surface rust starting to form on the weld that attaches the mounting bracket. This is for a new muffler system I bought only about a year and a half ago. (Mac 4 into 1 canister exhaust system).

Any thoughts on if it's possible to remove this rust or somehow keep it from spreading in the future?

Also, while we're talking about it, if anyone has any good tips on how to remove surface rust from chrome in general please share your thoughts. Thank you!

If it's pitted you're boned. Flash rust is pretty easy though. I've had good luck using alum. foil and good ol h2o. Just make sure you keep it wet and work it in circles, it will polish up.

Clean road garbage and surface rust from pipes (gently) with WD 40 and 0000 steel wool. Finish off with "Semichrome" metal polish.

alu foil and cola.
for parts that don't get too hot (like headers), tectyl is a strong and long lasting protection. make sure you get the clear stuff.

I'm with the aluminium foil crowd, that works well as long as it's not pitted.
