Finally after more than 3 weeks...
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:42:15 AM »
Finally got out yesterday to go for a ride.  Here in Chicago area, the weather's been crappy, or when the weather's better, there's always something interfering.  Well yesterday was iffy at best, and I didn't get out 'til almost 4PM, but I got out none the less.  Felt great, the bike likes the cool air (low 50's) and I'm looking forward to another chance to "blow the cobwebs out".  Woo-hooo!  :D

Good for you! I got out briefly yesterday too. Wed. through Sat. is supposed to be 60's & 70's here (Louisville) so I plan on riding to work those days. It's been cold and rainy here lately and I almost started disassembly. Glad I held out.  8)

Just returned from a couple of hours myself (S.E. Mich). Very nice, cool, sunny day. According to the weather forecast, should get a couple of more days like it later this week.  ;D
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

same thing here.  i was out of town, then my bike was giving me crap, and now after two weeks of relative neglect, i've logged 70 miles in the past two days.  this bike loves the cold.  and i am starting to not mind it.  so long as the ice stays away i can see a very long season here in the land of pleasant living.
for those that would be jealous to the point of wishing me ill, i can only say, at less than 1000 miles total in my life, i have a lot of catching up to do.
and you will be warm in your cage.

I hear ya. It's been a couple months for me due to starter switch problems, lack of time, and crap weather! Yesterday I got out for a shakedown run, plus I rode to work today! Too bad the ride home was in the cold rain. Good thing my gear is waterproof.

two days ago, when it was 45F here, i used vinyl cleaning gloves (unopened after being purchased for the initial cleaning of the bike with harsh chemicals... oops, thought that counts?) anyway they keep the wind from penetrating and causing that deep chill.  this is of course under good gloves.  mine are good, but have this asinine thing of being thinsulated with vents, so they are warm in the summer and vented in the winter.  they arent that bad in the summer actually and now with my dishwashing gloves they are kinda toasty in the winter.

It was about 40F this morning on my commute, and my hands didn't get cold until about the last 1/4 of my 30 mile ride. I have the Joe Rocket Rush Gloves.

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?store=Main&productId=p356095

They do a decent job without being too bulky. They're waterproof, and so far have never failed me, but I think I ask too much of them when I'm riding in anything colder than about 45F. I just hate having bulky gloves, and I'm too cheap to go the electric route, so this is what I have to make do.

The ride home was 46F when I left work, and while I was cold, it wasn't bad. The visibility however was horrible. These old headlights don't shine too much.

try rubber gloves underneath, all you notice is no windchill

I thought about that midway through my commute this morning when my hands were cold!

I'll have to remember that when I can do something about it. :) Thanks for the tip.
