Topic: Carpy Exhaust Flange question - wrong size?

So today I got my carbs and airbox on, all the wiring finished, and I just needed to put the exhaust on to get the bike running

buuuuut... My Carpy exhaust doesn't seem to fit. The flanges on the header are too small to fit the studs on the head. See pics:


here's a measurement from stud to stud on the head. Roughly 2.5"




Here's a rough measurement of the two holds on the Carpy flange. Looks closer to 2"




Here's an overlay of the factory finned flange over the Carpy flange. You can see the holes don't line up:




I obviously can't mount the exhaust. Did I get the wrong size here? Am I missing something?

I have seen this before. Lossa eng exhaust must come from same maker! The flanges had to be grinded 2+ mm on each side. Next is double or triple ex gaskets on ex port 2.

betcha got a 550 pipe by accident.  I would hope Carpy will make that right for you.

I heard back from Carpy. He told me I can bore the holes bigger (I'd rather not as it will push them really close to the edge) or he will swap it with a correct one. He's totally confused on how it happened as they are all stamped identical.

We'll see what happens. He seems a good, responsive guy to deal with.

You should not have to grind or put extra gaskets on a brand new pipe. Send it back.

so I forgot to mention my bike is a '76 F. Do the Super Sports have different stud spacing from the K or anything? I don't understand how these would be manufactured incorrectly.

Same spacing of the studs on the 392 and 410 heads

hm OK so with the Carpy pipe I should just be putting the header up to the head, sliding the flanges over the studs, and bolting it on...right?

Do I need to use the little factory spacers? (#3 here)




either way the flanges definitely do not fit.

parts 2 and 3 would be discarded (actually, you might want to save them in case they are needed for a different pipe made by someone who actually is concerned with motorcycle functionality) with Carpy's style of mount

As an update: I sent the exhaust back to Carpy and after inspection he admitted fault. He built a new one with new correct-sized flanges, had it coated in less than a week and sent it back to me. He covered shipping, and as I needed turn signals he threw in $60 worth of turn signals to cover the $40 I paid to send the exhaust back to him. Overall a bit of a hang up in the build, but he handled it very professionally and quickly. I'll be mounting the new pipe this week and will report back with results.

No, just different. The style of mount on the Carpy pipe does not require part #2 or #3, just save them in case you want to use a different style of pipe in the future.

I had one flange that was a little wonky on mine as well, I got mine off ebay though so I had to deal with it. I just used a round file to make it right, I also removed the studs and used allens.

basically, what Madmtnmotors said, plus I was busting on Carpy's overall quality, which from what I have seen, is quite poor...just cranking out, "looks only" parts, that really offer no real performance improvement.  Glad to hear that he made your situation right.

I have run Carpy's 4-1 pipe on my cb550. It's a good clean open (loud) design.  It seems the OP got a pipe for a 550 by mistake -- now whether that was carpy's, or someone doing shipping for him, or was mismarked by his pipe maker we don't know.
But he should make good on it and replace it, and not charge you for shipping it back or reshipping the correct one.
