Monoshock - Wich donor bike should I use.
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:57:52 PM »
Hello Guys!

I am a beginner from Belgium and I have a question about mono shock.
I have read a lot of stories about monoshock conversion but I figure this is not something to do as a beginner.

Could anybody tell me if there are any good donor bikes to start from who already have a mono shock?

Big thanks!

Are you building a 750 or 550/500 or 400/350? That effects this endeavor greatly.

It is an extremely difficult thing to do (mono shock conversion) correctly. This is far from a bolt-on conversion or of a plug-and-play. The donor bikes that use mono shocks have swing arms, subframes and main frames all designed for this structure. Our bikes do not. Not only will you need to do a great deal of welding in new structure, but likely machining of the donor swing arm and some decent calculations on the damping rates of the shock. Else, you'll be riding a stiff-arsed horse.

Are you planning to convert your bike to a solo rider seating, or maintaining 2-up riding? Lots of questions to answer before decent advice is sound. Is there a build of a bike you've seen that you're planning to copy?

Hi!

I am not looking for a conversion.
As you just noted, and I've read it everywhere, a mono shock conversion is a logo for a beginner.

So I am looking for a Honda bike with already has monoshock from factory and modify this bike without any risks of
The only one I know of at the moment is the Honda GL500.

the problem here is that I live in Belgium.
Old Honda's (except for CB's) are rare to find here.

So I would like to broaden my options with some other models that come standard with the mono shock.

I am planning to make a bike with a priority solo seat and I would like to manufacture a double seat for the occasional duo ride.

i would like to build something like this: (but I know this one has a conversion to monoshock, I would use a bike with already has monoshock)

The best case would be a 550 monoshock.

This is a custom made set up, not from any production bike, when done properly this is really the best way to go, it allows you to keep the stock geometry, as Cal stated though, it could take some working out to get the best springs for the rear shock. One of our forum members has done this type of mod to a 550, Maybe Godfrey...?

That's a bike Kinetic Motorcycles built. They sell the mono or dual rear shock kit for CB550s on their website

Not only do you have to consider the shock used, but also the geometry of the swingarm and attachment points for the monoshock.  You want to balance traction with dampening.  No offense, but this is really over your head as a beginner.

I understand that.

Thats why i started this topic to find any bikes who come with monoshock standard from factory. (Aircooled).

Never the less the kinetic conversion kit looks oke.
With the help from a welder maybe this could be done.

Does anyone have any experience with the kinetic monoshock conversion kit for CB?
Does anyone know any other models who come standard with a monoshock without any modification or conversion?

Thanks!

As I mentioned, its already been done on this site by a very competent builder, Maybe Don can link you to the thread, I'm a 750 guy, Don is more into the 500/550/650's than I am...  It is Godfrey, just find his build thread, here's the bike with his monoshock set up...

Haha. Maybe I should change my handle to CB550/650 Café Racer Fan!

Goddfrey did build a heck of a nice 550 monoshock bike:

MessnerMoto is in the process of building a hell of a 750 with a monoshock

I don't know of any 70s era bikes that came with a mono shock which would fit into the cafe genre. Most are going to be dirt bikes. You might be able to modify a dirt bike to your liking, but it would still require some fabrication skills.
I would get the Kinetic kit if your budget allows. Most others on the forum with mono shock bikes have the tools, skills necessary to build that bike safely.

There isn't a swap in option from the 70's, but to see a similar option to the one I posted , look at the 70's TZ Yamaha's, they had a monoshock set up very similar to Godfrey's. the TZ just used a longer shock... I'm still no keen on the Kinetics monoshock conversion, they use a longer swingarm which is completely unnecessary and changes the bikes geometry....

Their kit comes with only the bits to weld onto your stock swingarm, does it not? They don't sell a swingarm with the kit, so the geometry isn't changing.

Cool, the swingarm on that bike pictured above is tubular, I thought the kit included the finished arm...thanks for the clarification...

So if you are looking to just buy that bike as a 750 here is your bike...go ahead and buy it and have it shipped over to you from Rochester Hills, Michigan.

exact same bike from a local fab shop, donor bike is a 77 cb750 K...he DID not use the kinetic mono conversion but did his own with adjustable option per rider.

beautiful bike...I would buy it if i didn't have two projects going at once sucking up all my money.

Can I ask the obvious mono-shock question?

Why?  What's gained in doing this?
