Another title thread
« on: February 05, 2016, 11:04:45 AM »
I'm about to have a piece of property put into my name. I am thinking that some of the bikes which are there should be mentioned in the transaction, with the court recognizing that Dad had conspired to traveling to texas on occaision to return with SOHC4 "Junk."  (I think Banker Danny met Dad briefly)

Since the bikes are somewhat "abandoned" on the property, perhaps they could also be titled in the same transaction that the Judge is about to gavel out on to save expenses.  I  actually think the Judge  likes seeing  other projects go forward.

So my question is that I want to make sure that any of these bikes that are probably not reported stolen (no offense Danny) are in fact not stolen. How do you  search theft reports or  do a "background" perhaps finding former owners?

Go to your local Police department and have them do a VIN search.

I figured that was ultimately what would occur but there's always the concern that they might find you have stolen property and then what? :-\

I guess you're right though.

Keep in mind some bikes were titled by the engine number and some by the frame number. Have both ready.

My understanding is it is different by state.  I hear Michigan uses engine numbers sometimes.

Most have no mention of engine number, and with these Hondas it's  mostly vin vs engine# is unrelated to perhaps err by 100 bikes or more.

A motor swap might be obvious, by manufacture date, etc.  Or maybe if it was stolen, but probably not I'd think.

As well,  it might be a number to use to get any sort of title to it should all else fail.

No sense trying to disguise the fact if the bikes are actually stolen.  Best get it out of the way and in a manner that tells the police you're trying to do the right thing.  It's likely that the statue of limitations has long since passed on any crime that has happened - assuming one happened to begin with, which you don't know until you ask.

All the WI bikes back then were titled by engine number. Not sure if there is a rhyme or reason for it from state to state.

All the WI bikes back then...

I always wondered is Harley's had something to do with this?  A lot of their motors were put into aftermarket chopper frames.

Seems reasonable, it's the one thing not many people are capable of manufacturing or modifying enough to make a visible difference.
