Communication system from shop to house
« on: February 07, 2016, 12:37:51 PM »
I was wondering if anybody has a intercom between shop and the house.  My shop is 150 feet from the house, I usually keep a cell phone on me and with the family - aka wife - I communicate over the cellphone or Viber on the cell phone.  I have CAT5 connection and wifi hub in both locations, use it for laptop when I am forced to work for my company from home.

I always felt there must be an easy way to page and communicated between the two places but never actually found anything that would work cheaply enough.

Anybody has a good communication system?

I've always been a fan of radio. It can be tough.  Having a couple walkies is good, but hard to keep charged.

Been kinda wondering about an intercom or something similar myself. Sure we have cell phones, but sometimes she messages or tries to call me and my hearing isn't what it used to be. Plus, I sometimes (well, okay, Most of the time) have my phone turned down and I don't know about the call, till I either feel the vibration, IF the phone is in my pocket or I just happen to pull out my phone to check for calls or messages. Yeah, might be considered a waste, in My situation. but still considering. So, I don't really have any input, but am interested to see what some come up with,

My shop is literally downstairs....think the wife will walk down the steps to communicate? Not a chance.

She usually try's ringing my cell phone....

But with the Stereo, Shop fan, and compressor running...I never hear it.

I have a pair of those Radio Shack FM plug in types that use the house wiring to communicate.  They should be able to make the 150' but the farther the signal goes the more hum you pick up.  For in the house, they're ok.  Maybe someone near you has a set you can try?

I can't see how anything could be more convenient than a cell phone. I do have an old landline system that has a whole house page. Phone in every room, incl. garage. But not the shop. Its old tech and not something anyone would buy now, but sure works good.

I cover the shop with the cell.  Wife always has her iPhone on her, wherever.

But short of having a system, cell would be best seems to me.

One other idea you and 70cb750 could just do a swap.  You get the pesce and quite you are after and 70cb750 does not have to to for an intercom..

Since the wife swap seems to be out go to Amazon and type in wireless intercom you will find a number of options.  Some of them even have video so you can see her coming.

Steve-O just get her some jewelry that jingles so she can't seek up on you.

Hang that "Do not Disturb" sign on your shop door.
Most wireless home phone sets have intercom features.

Never knew hiding from  the wife was such a challenge.  Thank God cloning and look alike androids are not that far off.  The beauty of a hubby buddy android is that it needs very little programing.  One line of code is all that is required, you are right honey.
