Is this supposed to be fixed somehow so it cannot rotate.
I have reassembled my front wheel and can't work out if the speedo drive is supposed to have a lug or something to stop it rotating. Right now it will rotate about 20 degress in each direction and seems to hit some kind of stop.
The Honda service manual says
"Make sure that the speedometer gear box is mounted in the proper position."
But it sadly does not say how to achieve this

If the axle is done up tight, it should rotate freely only with the axle, but once the axle is clamped into the forks it should be held tight, John

Hi John
Still think I am confused.
The axle has a hole in one end right so if i stick a screwdriver in hole and tighten up nut on axle at other end to the point the gearbox is tight then axle seems to be locked up.
This is before installing in the forks of course.
I must ne missing soemthing really obvious here

Does your speedo gearbox turn ok when you remove it, poke a screwdriver in and use it to rotate the two lugs you can see under the seal? - it sounds like it may be seized

"Make sure that the speedometer gear box is mounted in the proper position."
Also I'm thinking alternatively maybe your collar (that's under the chrome retaining ring) didn't engage properly with the two lugs(/tabs) in the speedo gearbox?
