DIY'ers: Anyone build their own engine stand?
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:43:12 am »
Recently been thinking about building an engine stand our of 2x4's or 4x4's.

I just wanted something to hold an engine on that was roughly above waist height. Anyone have one they could post up?

I bought a cheap engine stand and adopted it to accept SOHC4 engine:

I wanted to be able to rotate the engine as needed.

Same thing here, just modified a stand. Roll over & remove the bottom bolt to remove the lower crankcase.

Here is quick and dirty, made from 2x2 and 2x4 scraps and strapped to jack.  Last picture shows engine being positioned to installed in frame

This one I made is not ideal for working on the engine - but it does allow me to start it!
John

edit- er the stand is upside down and the picture uploaded sideways  :-\ -the stand is standing on it's end.
The cut out section top left is for clearance to fit the 4 into 1.
The out rigger top right is prevent it tipping over when kickstarting.
The extra bit welded on bottom right is for the throttle.

I built a quick one out of 1" square tube and some tabs. I used it to clean/degrease the engine while having it in multiple positions. for example, to get at the pan and such in a comfortable way.

While your at it how about some ideas for a carburetor stand. I always need an extra hand when I try the tube method to check my floats.

I copied this from another forum member.
Engine stand, two pieces of threaded rod, some nuts, and four pieces of angle iron.
Adjustable for different engines as well.

I drew one up in a free CAD program and cut it out on a CNC plasma machine. It will eventually be attached to my engine stand mount. Never mind the welds!!!

Cycle Ranger, where did you get the angle iron pieces? Did you make them yourself? Thank you

I already had a about a 12" piece of angle iron laying around. I cut it into ~2 inch sections and drilled holes.
Home Depot or Lowes both sell sections of angle iron and threaded rod/nuts/washers/bolts for a few dollars.
Just need a hacksaw and drill to make the parts.
Here's another photo with my XS650 engine in the stand.

Kinda blurry photo, but here's mine. 2x4's & deck screws.

I did the very same thing. I also supported the engine from the front with a 2 by to keep all of stress off of the rear engine mounts.

As anyone put together an engine stand that doubles as a simple engine dyno?
I am about to do my first performance engine build for my 750K7 and I would prefer to have it running smoothly with anythings worked out and running with the performance engine before I deal with the labor of removing my bikes current motor and putting in the performance engine.

I don't have a pic handy but I got a cut up frame with a collection of stuff. I sawed off the lower frame rails and welded a channel to both sides so it would sit flat.  I'm planning to weld up an adaptor to put it on the engine stand and roll it over.

I designed these adapters for the Harbor Freight el cheapo engine stand.  I cut them out on the plasma table at work and bent them in the press brake.  The adapters can also be used bench top without the stand if need be.

That is trick, Bud!

I've toyed with the idea of getting a stand but would take up valuable space in the garage when not in use.

Thanks, Steve.  Can't wait to have an 836 chopper engine hanging on that stand.
