1978 CB750SS rim polishing..
« on: November 14, 2006, 07:57:15 AM »
I plan to polish both rims primarily because they're scratched.  I tried removing the rear axle from the rim and I couldn't get it out, is there something I'm doing wrong  ???  I thought these things just slid right out?  Has anyone painted / polished these style rims, if so do you have photos of the finished product?  I'm just trying to gather some info..  Thanks

If your refering to the comstars...............

I polished mine and painted the centers.

The Rim is aluminum, the spokes are steel.

The rims have a protective clear finish on them that you will have to remove before polishing starts.

The link above is to my gallery and a pic of the front wheel on my project.

As to removing the rear axle they sometimes get bound up by corrosion, burrs or misalignment.

Using a punch to drive them out will work but be careful that to don't bang on the end directly with a hammer or you will mushroom the head making it difficult to get out and impossible to get the nut back on.

Bikes not complete yet..more a work in progress....

There are more pictures in the gallery.

I did tape off the spokes very carefully. They are painted with epoxy primer followed by urethane ( Nason polyurethane which is duponts "no name" brand" ...quality is great without the name brand price)
