Which brand to choose for 1976 cb750f clutch plates.
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:48:39 PM »
Hi again cb750 fans and followers.I am now looking to choose between 2 brands of clutch friction plates set. Pls give your reviews or feedbacks if you happen to have use them on your cb750 bikes. These are the brands:

1. Vesrah Clutch Friction Plate Set - VC-145

2.  EBC Clutch Friction Plate Set - CK1143

Or this same EBC brand but different model. Check the difference on the plates.

3. EBC Clutch Friction Plate set - CK1145

The 3rd one looks like same as what i got but i wanna ask if the others can also fit my 1976 cb750f supersport model.

oldscullero,

Went through pretty much the same deal a year ago with my K6.

Found out that the "Slash" cut friction disks (other than the Top one on your bike) is NOT what you want.
The slash cut is supposedly an "improvement".  Hondaman can give you a better explanation then I can.
The third picture that shows the "Square" cut friction disks (6 of them) and the single "Slash" cut Top friction disk is what you want.

In your post, the set I would get if I had to choose 1 of the 3 you show would be the ck-1145 (the third picture).

I bought the set from Yamiya - 4.5.8- HONDA CB750 K0-K6 CLUTCH SET (EASY TYPE) Similar to the ck-1145.
You might want to check out the Yamiya part for your bike.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

I would go with the readily available Honda ones. They are not even that expensive. There is nothing better out there. But if you like to do the job twice, or the bike is mostly parked, aftermarket it is.

Not that expensive? $120 for friction disks? Also, friction disk "B" (the slash cut one) is NLA from Honda...

I just got a very nice lesson today about clutch friction discs courtesy of hondaman. Now i fully undersrand the reasons behind those different types of clutch friction discs. Thank you for that hondaman. And as well to madmtnmotors as well. It just highlights all the best people around here.

Anyway, for now i have all the box clutch friction types which still works wonderfully but i have to observe it. And feel it at the same time. Maybe do some test where my riding is best comfortable to feel. I may plan on experimenting the combinations until i get whats the best combination. All fully noted guys and friends. For the metal clutch plates, i will have to open a new topic for that.

On the other hand, i still got the problem on using the 1st gear just like before. Ill start a different thread on that since its somehow different from this topic already. Ill give my conclusion after i test my bike to run for some miles on the road and give feedback. That way this will clear out the questions about clutch friction plates.

I guess, we all come from different walks of life and thus come to different conclusions when it comes to judging what is expensive and what isn’t or how much to spend on our Hondas since we all apparently drive them for different reasons. I am always grateful if Honda parts are still available from the dealership.  To me, these parts get really expensive when they are not available.  I tried the EBC clutch, and threw it out after the first trip, driving passes in the Alps. The Honda ones lasted me 200,000 miles on the other hand. I put genuine Honda ones in again, and things are back to perfect. This is my experience, yours might be different. However, mine is not a single experience, and I am in good company with it. So it’s based on my experience and that of others who work on these bikes since the early 70s. As far as Vesrah goes, I have seen enough when it comes to their gaskets. I have nothing flattering to say about them if compared to genuine Honda. Again, your experience might be different. But nothing convinces me more than my own experience.
Friction Disc B is available from CMSNL if it really needs to be replaced.

Good point wobbly. I also got a not so good personal review about ebc clutch discs but both your point and madmtnmotors have their own pros and cons which i both consider already. Thanks for all the input and in fact i am leaning right now towards genuine honda clutch discs A and an oem clutch disc B. I learned a lot from all the inputs here.

I always use genuine Honda parts*. They're reasonable priced considered the quality they offer, become modified when necessary (my friction plates for example!) or upgraded (brake pads) and - most important - they save me time. And time, my dear comrades, is the only I (and you) cannot make extra of. And in the end that's what counts. I hate to waste precious time with thoughts like 'maybe, maybe'. Do a search on what I wrote before about genuine Honda airfilter elements, that can be serviced/replaced within 10 seconds. Unbeatable.
* Exception: stock rear shocks were clearly designed for American roads so I replaced them by Koni's.

I would love to know also, as I have an EBC kit waiting for the day it needs to be installed. Also have a full Barnett Kit (Friction disks, Plates, and Springs) .... The EBC kit has the "slash" type and barnett are more Square. I would love to know what the differences are. Thanks for the info

As far as OEM honda Clutch Plates, Does anyone know if the plates on the 78k or 78F are different than the earlier clutch plates? Thanks

I think the only difference is the double thick metal plate and taller basket.

Besides the double thick steel plate, the later model uses two different types of friction disks, in that one of the friction disks (the outermost "B" disk) is slash cut, and the tabs around the perimeter are longer than the tabs on the other six friction disks. The cutout in the later clutch basket is wider at the outer edge to accommodate the wider tabs on the slash cut "B" disk.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but was wondering whether Oldhatt45 (Charlie) can give us a review on the Yamiya Easy Clutch set? I've seen that on their website & often wondered whether it was worthwhile. Charlie please let us know if you think it made any difference!
