Need help repairing my 1982 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:05:02 PM »
So I've got a 1982 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk, it was my first bike and I had just began riding,  I was riding home one night when my chain came off and well while I was pulling into a building entrance to call for help, a drunk driver ended up turning into the same entrance/exit and hit me, which happened to put my motorcycle out of commission. so after a long legal battle his insurance agreed to paying for the repairs or for the motorcycle. So I'm trying to decide wether to kick it and look for another one, keep it and sell the parts or just repair it. the parts i need right now would be a fuel petcock, handlebars, handlebar controls, clutch master cylinder with lever, brake master cylinder and lever, triple tree clamps, rear brake lever and connecting rod, I believe mine might be bent due to the impact from when i got hit in the back. I was planning on getting rid of the seat, the plastic rear fenders  and cutting the frame a little so that way I can have a seat pan fabricated. If anyone can share information on the triple tree clamp and fork measurements I'd appreciate it.

I am looking for parts! Hit me up! Just picked up a 1982 650 nighthawk as my first bike too and I am having trouble finding anything. So sorry about the bike, and I hope you're okay!

Things i'm interested in:
Seat
sidecovers
carburetor parts
chrome front fender
tires
electricals - solenoid, tail light, turn signal

hell, I've only just begun the maintenance required on a bike this old to get it back on the road (was in shoddy condition when I bought it. Runs, but not road worthy) and honestly I'll probably buy just about anything you're willing to rip off of it. Theres a chance I could pick the whole bike up...
Let me know!

If your triples are damaged, I would be very suspicious of the forks and possibly the frame neck being bent. I'd part that bike out, buy a different bike and go from there.

Actually they're not damaged, I just heard it'd be best to replace them, the possibility of things going all wobbly are more then likely if I don't replace them. I was hit from the rear, so my tail light, rear fender, and that bar where the helmet locks connect to and the blinkers go, broke. So I was looking to  cut the frame and build a loop seat, obviously from drooping it on its side I will need the handlebars but those are very easy to find, if i wanna stay with stock , but i was looking for measurements so i could look for a different triple tree clamp so i can install just a set of handlebars instead of two separate handlebars, after removing parts, my brake master cylinder is perfect and all i really need is my left side handlebar, clutch master cylinder, headlight, taillight, brake lever and connecting rod and this bike will be on the road, if unable to get these parts i suppose i can part it out.

hey man its a really nice bike isn't it? i honestly fell involve with my honda nighthawk, i was planning on building it into a scrambler, and just ripping down dirt roads! i have the seat, my bike didn't come with any of the side covers, so sorry about that, i have a very good set of carbs that may just need a little syncing , my chrome front fender is slightly bent, but i was planning on cutting it cause I wanted it shorter, for the scrambler look. my tires are in good condition, my rear tire is brand-new actually, i have all electrical's except for the tail light, headlight and turn signals, my fuel tank has a few nicks on it but nothing that can't be cleaned up, the bike is in over all good condition, i'll try to take pictures of the bike so you can get a better look at it, show me some pics of your bike so i can see more or less what you're having to work with! Theres a link ill try to post with a pages of 80's honda cb650sc nighthawk parts, like just about everything, cause i was planning on ordering the stuff to get a good rebuild going

Dude legend! I LOVE mine, even though I've only ridden it a handful of times so far. I'll upload some pics later tonight, I'm currently on my phone in a bar. Right of the bat I'd be extremely interested in that seat of its in good condition, and possibly your carb too. I just cleaned mine and spent a weekend cleaning jets and replacing gaskets, so I'll see how it runs this weekend.

Took a bit off of it, to give you a look and feel for what im working with. After today my confidence has been restored that this will be back on the road by the end of the month. Dude a handful of times is enough times to never want to get off. Was looking to just replace the handlebars, obviously, the hand controls, loop the back of the frame and cut that brace in the back where the seat is off, new sprokects and chain, im wanting a nice amber or yellow headlight, love the look. Then just mount a tailight to the rear of the frame, and keep the blinkers off since theyre not needed in texas, I want to fabricate a nice brat seat, I know it may look difficult due to the frame but im sure its doable, and I was looking to a nice led bar, something built for offroad so it can be used for heavy duty purposes. And im from brownsville,  texas Then Southern tip of texas.

Here are the only 2 good ones I have right now.
Currently I'm in NY, but I am moving to southern Oklahoma in about a month to go to school, before I end up in El Paso for work next fall.

Apparently it's illegal in NY to park an unregistered vehicle on a public street or lot, so I have had to ratchet the partly disassembled bike into the bed of my truck to the cops don't tow it (they put a warning sticker on it already when it was in a parking lot behind where I live!) I just really don't want to register it in NY... I'm about to move, it's more expensive, and there are lots of dumb equipment and inspection laws.

Right now I'm trying to finish the carb cleaning. 2 of the screws on the #1 carb are stripped and rusted so I'm trying to get them out. I also picked up a Kreem kit to remove rust and treat the inside of my gas tank. Apparently its nigh on impossible to get replacement float bowl drain screws, so that's my next challenge before I can get a good tune since all of mine are corroded and cause a leaky carb.

Besides a working carburetor, right now the only thing I really need is a tail light. I replaced the bulbs and the lights come on for the rear brake only, but there is no running tail light or front brake light. Ive fiddled with it, but it will take extensive troubleshooting to find the problem, i'm sure. Such is the life of a 35 year old secondhand bike with 24,000 miles. I would buy it again in a heartbeat since I only paid $500 for it  ;D

Hi, I just had your 2016 post come up when searching something else. Are you still looking for parts for 82 Nighthawk. I sold mine and buyer didn't want the parts I accumulated( not because I neded them, just started picking things up off ebay because they are hard to find. I have carbs, wireharness, rear wheel with brake, side covers((candy flair blue) missing some holding pegs. I have pics if you're interested. I will take pretty much any offer at this point especially if you take it all as I'm trying to clean stuff from my mess of a home. Best to try my email: idigahorsie@gmail.com Thx! Beth
