1975 HondaCB750F Cylinder Stud Installation
« on: June 08, 2016, 09:43:43 AM »
Ready to install new APE cylinder studs.  I'm looking for advice on installation procedures. Im finding conflicting information from APE and this forum.  Do I install the studs dry - Do I install the studs after dipping the threads in oil - Do I install using Blue Threadlock - Do I install using both oil and Blue Threadlock.  The studs are to be screwed in until they bottom out with no more than 8 ft-lbs torque.

Thanks!

Clean and dry stud holes.
VERY light red loctite on the threads, torqued just to 8ftlbs.  Careful to not block any oiling holes.
Let it dry overnight before you install and torque the head.

Measure the height you need before you try to bottom them out!
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Will all the studs bottom out to the correct heights?  Is there a concern for blocking oil passages?  My cylinders and head are at a machine shop so I can't measure the heights.

I would follow the instructions from APE. My instructions for my Kibblewhite studs also had conflicting information from some things I've read. I followed their instructions and all is good. When in doubt, refer to manufacturer's instructions. especially a reputable one like APE.

I have a 78 750F.  Stock Studs were sitting at 13.1 cm and 17.2 cm. When I installed HD studs torqued to 8 lbs the heights were within 0.1 cm of my original measurements.
Good luck

Just to follow up, I installed the new cylinder studs using the following procedure: 1) cleaned the threaded holes, 2) put a light application of ThreadLocker Red on the ends with most threads, 3) screwed studs in and torqued to 8 ft-lbs.  The special tool really helped out here.  Long stud heights above the case surface were all 172mm. Short studs were 133mm and 135mm.

THat looks awesome so far, I have to get some HD Studs for my build too.... I think I roll with the APE ones although the Kibblewhite ones look pretty nice too....not sure if the HD nuts are overkill or not? Thanks for the photos and the info! Build is looking great so far!
