Oil Filter Spring
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:45:23 am »
OK... I messed up!

It is not critical; but I have a question:

Yesterday I changed the oil on my 1976 CB550F and forgot to re-install the spring that sits between the oil filter and the filter housing.  Naturally I had refilled the engine with oil... so... How important is that spring in the functioning of the flow of oil?  Will it have an affect on the overall oil pressure?

There may be some oil bypassing the filter.

You are not alone, I was changing oil on my 750 and realized that the spring is missing, not sure how many 1500 miles cycles I was riding without it, there was no problem or damage - but it does not mean it cannot happen.

Your call, I would drain the oil into a clean container and reinstall the spring, just for the ease of mind.

How much oil does the filter housing hold? Remove the filter housing and install the spring. Replace the few ounces of oil lost and be done.

Take a clean container and place it under the filter housing. Take the filter housing off and replace the spring. Install the filter housing and put that clean oil from the container back into the oil tank. Good to go...

And don't forget the large washer that is usually lost by sticking on an old filter and getting thrown away. It goes between the spring and the filter.

I will remove only the housing and see how that goes...makes all the sense in the world...

I literally did this same thing on my 72 CB500 Four. I caught it before i started up the bike which meant was able to remove the housing without any loss of oil due to no oil having been ran through the filter yet.

Has anyone  found the spring between the filter and engine?  I have. Ditto on the washer.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
If you love it, set it free, if it stays it's probably one of my 750's.

Not having the spring and washer in the right place allows oil to bypass the filter as that was honda's design for a filter bypass valve.  If the filter element were too clogged it would push the filter out allowing the oil to bypass around the filter l is how it was described to me.  So, not having the spring and washer prevents it from operating correctly.

Is this correct?  The washers are not inexpensive if you commonly toss them and end up replacing them often. Makes you want to paint them a hivis yellow or green to prevent that toss it error.

They get stuck to the filter and thrown away with them.

Need some advice on the correct position of the oil filter spring - is it between the filter and the engine housing or between the filter and the oil filter housing??  On my 750Four I found it between the filter and the engine housing and a friend said that is the wrong position.
Thank you in advance for the advice given.

Should have oil cover then spring and then washer then your filter.

Spring is between the filter housing and oil filter. The washer sits on the filter rubber with the spring hitting the washer. When you put it together on your bench you lay the filter down so the inside is facing up. I usually put the new filter bolt o-ring in place stick the bolt back through the filter. Then I put on the new housing o-ring. Then slide onto the bolt the spring, washer and insert the filter. Now you are ready to put the unit on the case. Be careful not to cross the threads.
