I was PMing calj737 the other day regarding some problems with the Motogadget V2! and he suggested i should post what im up to. so here goes. With a little trepidation i will throw up a few posts of what im trying to do. A few years back i got the bug for a cafe racer. After months of research i decided upon the Benjies cafe racer "Pinas 550". 2 years and a bucket full of sweat, swear words and absolutely no mechanical knowledge the BCR replica fired up. This was my first ground up build on a bike and im pretty chuffed with the end result. Ive put 350klm on it so far with minor bugs to sort out. 1/2 way through the benji build my then 14yo son started to take an interest. Great bonding time in the shed leads to some pretty serious conversations. all of the worlds problems according to a 14yo were solved in no time flat. One of the more serious questions was "can i have a bike one day?" So after some serious discussions with non bike loving ex no1 son was asked what sort would you like. Cognito Moto CB550 as quick as a flash was the reply. A donor was found sitting in an abandoned chook shed and so started journey number 2.

Now where to get a seat and CB500T tank from? not many of those in NZ so off to ebay. I am still amazed at what you can get shipped anywhere in the world. tank and seat arrived before full strip down began. at this stage i was still completing bike 1.

all good. in keeping with the "vintage" tank and seat are all metal. Benjies do a great job. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Strip down almost complete. one thing i learnt quickly is the need to bag n tag everything that comes off. parts were arriving daily. gsx r front shipped from the states before they become pricey. bargain at $350.

Tank returned from painters. Cognito Moto hub, clamp and rear set brackets arrived along with bates headlight, new rotors and 2nd hand calipers. Mock up almost complete. Rear sub frame to be rebuilt.

About this time had to shift house. Up until here I had the luxury of keeping both bikes seperate which helped in keeping parts from getting mixed up. So onto the trailer and introduced Benji to no2. They liked each other right from the start!!

Ha.. just last week he beat me for the first time ever in pushbike wheelstands. 600 mtrs and put it down so he could come back and trash talk me!! my job is almost done :-)

another house move..last one for a while im hoping but when you get a major earthquake going through your town and then houses being rebuilt at a hell of a rate it all becomes the norm. Engine being pieced back together. i just have the head to be returned from machine shop. decided to go with external oil lines and cooler. Internals have some nice goodies. dynoman 592 pistons, new valves, cycle x direct intake, new bearings seals and primary drive and cam chain. slotted cam sprocket. cyclex electronic ignition with 358b cam. still trying to locate some cr26 carbies but everyone seems to be out of them at the moment. And this brings me up to present day. Just starting on the rewire with Motogadget.

What do you mean by a Cycle X direct intake?

cycle exchange are selling a manifold and carbies package that suits the 550. unfortunately the factory is struggling to supply the carbies correctly spaced. dyno man only have standard spaced and are waiting for their next shipment as well. will try godfreys. thankyou for the tip. I need to get the bike finished for the NZ motorcycle show 13th August. both bikes are entered. first show ever so a bit nervous getting everything done in time. nothing like having a deadline tho!

wiring of the mtotgadget carries on. starting to understand it a bit as we go. So far we have lights front and rear, blinkers, starter. brakes next. just a question does the unit have a built in horn?? when i hit the horn switch it sounds like its coming from the unit.. is this normal or is it telling me to stop...

Thanks cal. After a coffee and a bit of head scratching worked out the horn was in fact working. Threw me as I have it mounted down near the motogadget and it needs a bit of sound adjustment. There's a small bolt on the underside I think I can adjust so that at least sounds like a horn. Don't intend to use it much but need it to get through the registration process. Loving the motogadget but man those buttons are a right pain. A nightmare to wire up. Left side done and working. Right side 3 button tomorrow night..run out of swear words tonight so will regroup and attack it once I empty the swear jar out.

Ha I've never heard the vtr's called a superchicken. That's the daily ride. these other two won't see much rain work! We are so spoilt for great rides in the South Island of New Zealand. Twisty roads that are fairly deserted and not a lot of eyes watching.

That's because it was also branded a Superhawk in some markets. Great bike.

Buttons finally installed after a bit of language. Had to exit underneath the clip ons as I have the tarozzis that have the securing bolt right in the end. All sheathed up with braid and heat shrunk on the ends. Love the look of the braid. Testing everything as we go. Lights are good, blinkers work both sides, ace well speedo lights up a beautiful backlit blue, horn works although needs some tuning and then find the original starter solenoid is as dead as. Nothing!!!! Power going to it and nothing coming out...ass! New one on the way. Next we finish the motor.

Home from work this arvo and what should I find on the front doorstep!! Nice wee package containing the goodridge super bike lines. Tea had to wait so I could put them straight onto the bike along with the new ferando master cylinder. Hour later all bled and working a treat. I think I will get no1 son to push me down the road tomorrow while making engine noises. Purely to check they are working ok..

Just going to start finishing the motor on the weekend and was wondering if you can fit the ace well speedo sensor to the engine drive sprocket. Would like to hide the sensor wiring and don't really want to run the wires down the fork legs. Is this do able?

Bracket done for the ace well sensor to run off front sprocket. Quite simple when u think about it. Still allows plenty of room for the 520 chain. Will just need to make sure all electrics are well tucked away.

Problem with Motogadget. I activated the hazard function and both front blinkers flash and rear light flashes. Rear blinkers stay off but they are wired in tandem with fronts??? Deactivated hazard by holding both blinker button simultaneously for 2 seconds. Now front blinkers operate correctly but rear light still flashes. Rear blinkers dead. Checked ground for rears all good. Went back into menu set up and changed rear led to option b - no different. Put it back to option a. Still the same. Checked both blinkers directly to battery all good. Rear light is powered through aux. a bit stumped if anyone knows how to get it back to working.

Every thing was working perfectly prior to hazard mode. Now it is like it has had an internal rethink and moved rear blinkers over to the rear light. Both front and rear blinkers are wired in tandem to their respective left and right output. Rear light is from aux outlet. Brake is fed from brake. I went into menu to check and all settings are at their default setting. I tried moving to single wire light brake setup but still it flashes with the front blinkers. I'm struggling to understand how it can chose front blinkers only when the rears are wired direct with the fronts. On the unit when either left or right is chosen the correct light flashes, aux doesn't flash. I tried disconnecting the rear light to see if this would somehow move the power back across to the blinkers and it didn't. I will take a video and post to show what it's doing.
