A couple times now I have hit the starter button with my bike in gear and the kickstand down only to have it lurch forward! Is there a switch available that will lock out the starter when the kickstand is down? I don't want a neutral switch as it might be necessary to start the bike at a light after stalling. I am specifically looking for a way to lock it out when the side stand is down.
Pardon me, but you have it all backwards. If you need to re-start at a light, then you
definitely would benefit form a Neutral Safety Switch. A side stand switch would only benefit you in the garage, but a NSS would be effective in
ALL circumstances. If you stall, the first thing you'd want to do is pull the clutch before you hit the starter. This insures you're either in Neutral, or the clutch is disengaged so you don't go lunging forward into a stopped vehicle.
I get the whole side stand idea, but its
my opinion they are not terribly effective and they're prone to problems. When you drive away with the side stand down, momentum or friction will often pop it up anyway. But, vibration can cause it to move away from the frame just enough to disconnect your electrics and cause intermittent stalling.
So I'd wire in a NSS from a later year and be done with it.
My opinion.
