Topic: Can't shift into gear

I recently acquired 2  750 Hondamatics  1977.    They were in dry storage for the past 25 years.  I got the engine running on one of them but I can not get it to shift into gear.   I tried to move the shift lever on the other bike also with it not running and I can't get it to move into gear either.  So what am I not doing right to get these bikes into gear???  Both bikes were in neutral when I got them and I am NEW dealing with the Hondamatic.  Thanks for any information.

if the side stand is down it keeps the bike from going into gear
