eBay flakes.....WTF is wrong with people?
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:40:02 PM »
eBay, FleaBay, FeeBay....whatever you call it, I've had good luck there. I can usually find what I want for cheaper than any other outlet and I'd have to say that 99% of all my transactions there have been positive.
This rant isn't about eBay so much as it is about sellers.

On July 30, I won an auction for a set of CB350 handle bars/controls. I didn't need the bars but wanted the controls. The price was right and I won.
Around August 11th, I sent the seller a message asking if they had shipped, since there had been zero communication, tracking number, etc. He responds with a tracking number that shows zero activity over the next 5 days. Doesn't respond to questions.
The bars get here and the brake perch is broken on the RH bar. Worthless to me now. I file via eBay since his communication has been so poor. He asks for pics, I send them, he offers a partial refund.
Uh....no. I can't use a partial handle bar or partial control.
Still waiting to see how this turns out, but I DO feel protected by eBay and PayPal.

In the meantime, I shop for a CL350 gas tank. I've been through three tanks that are junk so I ask LOTS of questions to several sellers. One guy is quick to respond with details. I pay a little extra for a tank that's been stored with oil inside. Complete, except for a broken gas cap latch. We negotiate a price and I pay.
Two weeks go by and I ask if there's a tracking number. "Oh, sorry....I was on vacation. I'll ship it tomorrow".
Gets here today and it's solid and clean inside....but he removed the tank badges/screws and the petcock! Those '71 tank badges are hard to find and will cost ~$40-45/set, easy.
I've contacted him as well and am awaiting a response. But, in the meantime, I can't move forward with bodywork and paint in case I have to return the tank.

Yeah, I have run into a bunch of problems trying to buy parts online. Nothing here but guys on Facebook group are about as flakey as they come. Been three months trying to get the correct parts I ordered. I was after 78 750f airbox, rear caliper and master and oil lines. Over paid cause I wanted them. I get them and wrong caliper (by a decade). No master. So I paid 140 dollars for a airbox and two oil lines. Guy won't refund my money cause he has "paypal and bank issues" probably from doing the same thing to others. Says he is gonna send other parts he has to make up for it. Not holding my breath.

Contact PayPal. Say what you will, but they and eBay are good about protecting the buyer.

Whenever I send money I always add extensive details to the note, stating what the money is for.

PayPal often gives you an option for a delayed payment, where the seller doesn't get his money until a week or so after the item is delivered. If you get the option to use it it can provide some security.

It's not just ebay and clist facebook sellers that get flaky.

I've run out of fingers and toes counting all the people who have let me down without remorse.

I've had a mixed bag of sellers.  One parts dealer shipped me parts that did not show damage in the photos but at least took the parts back for a refund.  Another offered me a discount and then reneged and banned me from future sales.

Always look at the feedback score on ebay. Honest sellers want to maintain a high score and will do what ever it takes to make it right,(normally).

To be totally honest I have had great luck with e-bay sellers.  I believe my luck has been largely because I deal with salvage companies rather than "some guy" trying to part a bike.

 WTF is wrong with people?!?!

If the photos of the tank in the listing include the badges and petcock it is implied that they are part of sale unless he explicitly stated in the auction description that they were not.
The seller is at least careless, at most dishonest.
He owes you a partial or full refund. I have no doubt ebay will back you.

 My thoughts exactly.

I've had mostly good experiences on Ebay.I just dealt with a very good seller who advertises the parts exactly as they are and gives a 30 day return policy.I bought a pr. of used oem shocks from a 1972' Suzuki TS185 from this seller "5034motoretro" in Idaho and they came to me today in excellent condition(even though the pic was a bit fuzzy)and I was very pleased. No rust on the shafts and cosmetically very nice even though he said "has rust" it's just a tiny bit here and there and will clean off easily, solid chrome underneath and they're holding oil as they would when the bike was fresh;I removed the springs and I'm going to drill a small hole, drain the oil and have my friend tig a threaded sleeve onto the bottom of the bodies so that I can drain and re-fill them when I choose. He has good parts !  :)

I have been a ebay seller since 1999 and have Never cheated anyone.
You have had a bad time with a seller, ebay and paypal will back you, but it might take a long time to resolve
even minor problems. My suggestion is to actually call paypal and talk to a person, not email as I feel most times
emails aren't read very quickly.
Your experience was probably unique, but I have found that in the past 4 years buyers want cheap,
and are not willing to pay what something is worth. Remember, if someone is selling a gastank, carbs etc for a very low price, then something might be fishy.
If someone posts a picture and does not say exactly what is not included, then everything in that photo is implied as being included in that sale, especially in your case.
good luck.

Don't get me wrong: my overall eBay experience has been very good, both as a buyer and a seller.
I'm not too worried about either of these transactions yet. I know I'll be made whole. I just hate that I've wasted this much time and am still no farther ahead than when I started.

Scott,
The last sentence of what '74CB750' just wrote, about  "does not say exactly what is not included".. I've been let-down by having those pics in the listing also and made purchases on the items(and found-out later  ::) that they pumped-up the listing w/ that crap) I did feel the seller 'made it look' like those other parts were included..;it was very misleading and upset me as I thought I was getting those parts as a package.
I don't think those sellers need to be leading-on buyers to think that,it's kinda false advertising, unless they say exactly what IS included and what isn't.

The badges and petcock are clearly pictured. We exchanged several messages about the condition of the tank (since I have three that are rusty, so far). It was a Buy It Now auction with a Best Offer feature. I made an offer, he countered, I accepted. Not once did he say anything about removing those items.

He's responded and said he did remove the badges and will look for them. I told him to find the special screws, too. I shouldn't have to go to Lowes (which I don't think I'll find them there) or order them from Honda. He also said he tossed the petcock and to just replace it with a K&L. Nope....it was pictured and I bought it.
I don't want to be a jerk, but I paid a little extra for a nice solid tank that had been stored with oil inside. There are other, cheaper tanks that are missing badges, etc., but I paid for this one. I wouldn't have spent that much money on a tank needing another $65 worth of stuff ($43 for badges/screws and $22 for a petcock).

I hear what you're saying;you've been through Enough grief w/ CL350 fuel tanks and enough is enough.
How is the condition of the tank w/ rust compared to all those others that had hidden rust pinholes, etc. ?

Pics and text from the auction:

Cleanest CL tank you'll find on here. On the inside of course. The outside could use some cleaning up and some paint. Inside has been filled with oil for long term storage. Worked like a charm.

The ONLY thing he mentioned during our exchanges is that the latch for the gas cap was broken. I used that in my negotiations. As far as I'm concerned, I was buying the tank AS PICTURED.

File a grievance with paypal.
Item received was not item listed. Don't wait for the seller to string you along.
He knows what he did.

+1  Might cause the seller to 'think twice' before trying it again

I will if he doesn't make it right. I sent him a message last night and he's responded this morning. I told him pretty much the same things I've said here. He either sends me the parts or credits me $65 to replace them. That's my stance.

You need to post the seller's user name so members don't bid on his stuff.
If something is in a picture and is normally attached to the item,
then the implication is the item comes complete unless,
boldly stated otherwise.
Don't negotiate, file grievance immediately.

If he doesn't reply by the time I get home tonight I will. That gives him 24 hours to respond. He quit replying when I told him I bought what was pictured and want what was pictured.
