So I've got this 1977 cb550f. The bikes looking great with new wheels/spokes new shocks, paint job etc etc. Thing is I'm fine with cosmetic stuff or the replace one old part with a new part but other stuff I have no idea. For instance, the front drive sprocket has some play in it. It rocks slightly from side to side. I've taken a video to try and show what I'm on about but not figured out how to upload it yet. Anyway my question is, is this rocking normal??? Or should there be no play whatsoever. Thanks in advance

As Scott said, normal, and welcome.  If you need a manual, one should be downloadable from this forum...Larry

hello, I have a slight oil leak that accumulates at the top of the fins (see pics). The weird thing is, the bike isn't running so I can't figure out why it's accumulating at the top, as I would expect oil to be low down in the sump with the bike not running. Also can't work out where it's coming from. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thank you

Clean it all off, and liberally cover with baby powder (which will wash off easily afterwards).

Best method I've ever used to find oil leaks.

And welcome. You've struck gold joining this forum, they're a great bunch and always happy to help :).

Hi, no I'm from a bit further north than Sidcup. I live in Yorkshire.
I have another issue with the bike but I don't know how to start a new topic/thread.
The problem is that there is a tap tap tapping noise that sounds like it's coming from number 1 cylinder exhaust tap pet/valve. The strange thing is if I disconnect number 1 spark plug the noise gives away. Put the plug cap back on and it instantly returns.
Any ideas anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks......Pete

Do you see any arching between the cap and the block?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I've been at work since I posted the question and I was wondering whether it could be an arcing issue. I'll check tomorrow. Am I right in thinking that if I fiver the whole cap etc with insulating tape it could rule that one out. Also could it be a timing issue or would you expect to it affect more than one plug
Thanks again

Hi again. Well I don't see any arcing. I've changed the plugs (again) today. Made sure all the gaps are correct but this ticking noise is so irritating. I also put a load of insulating tape round the plug cap just to try but no difference so took it off. I've got a link to video I've made so you can see/hear it.

Got it figured. It was a poorly seated exhaust gasket. Seems obvious now. Aw well it's a steep learning curve this sohc business

Once an issue is correctly diagnosed, many times it seems very obvious!
