Dang Dang and Double Dang!
« on: September 05, 2016, 11:54:09 AM »
Today I was finally able to install my recently cleaned carbs for my Sabre.  Took a long long time to do - mostly due to some work conflicts, but also those carburators are really complicated.

Put the tank on - hit the starter, fuel is flowing, bike coughs.  Have to recharge my starter while I let the gas seep into the bowls.  Go back out - "cough" "cough cough" "rumble cough" "rumble rumble ROAR!"  Success!  Except  "Hmm, is that condensation dripping down there..."
Nope - my fuel inlet tee at the #1 and 2 carburators is leaking like a sieve.  Gasket failed of course.

Now I have to take the carbs off, break the bank down again, just to replace the inlet tee gaskets.  "Ahhhhhgggggg!"

Fine - I'll blow off some steam, take the Nighthawk out for a spin.
Starts up, purrs like a kitten, not a cold blooded bike so it sputters until it warms up, pull out into traffic, pull the clutch, shift... shift??? <click> <click> <click>.... pull off side of road.  Limp it home.

My clutch is definitely engaging - it will idle with the bike in gear but maybe not enough, it's hydraulic so it might need to be bled.  Maybe the shifter forks bent, although I find that unlikely.  The shift pedal link is very position sensitive - so that might need to be adjusted.  EIther way I have to let the bike cool down so that I can fiddle with it.

I ain't blowing off that steam - in fact I'm starting to build up some more. >:(

Done it many a time Simon ! I think however putting them back on is a greater challenge.

Actually taking the carbs off the Sabre isn't difficult, it's certainly time consuming - but not difficult.

Taking the carbs off the CB550 is difficult.

Taking the airbox on and off the Sabre is difficult - someone at Honda didn't actually look at what they designed when they designed that airbox.

At any rate I'm going to see if I can just loosen the intake boot screws to give me enough slack to wiggle the 'T' out of the way.

After I bleed the clutch on the Nighthawk - but something tells me the shifter pawl broke or at least popped out of place.  I don't know what it is about that Nighthawk - the shifter is a piece of junk.

See if that o-ring on your tee does not swell up and seal first from the gas before tearing them down again.
Sometimes time does heal leaky tees.

<crosses fingers REALLY hard>

Possibly it will.  I did remember how it practically fell out when I broke the bank down - so it's not like it was tight prior to removal and it sure didn't leak then.

"Better grab the BMW or 750 Limited next if you wanna ride   !!"  Quote from Ekpent

Naw I have my CB550 back from my Dad.  Picked it up a couple of weeks ago.  So I have 3 bikes that I can fall back on.

I'm beginning to regret picking up that Nighthawk.

Hey incidentally Dukie - that giving it a chance to seal up on it's own may have just worked.

It may be that I'm just out of gas, but I let it drip on it's own and it is steadily improving.  Still a little bit of a leak, but it's tolerable.

Tell you what, now that I've rebuilt the carburators - that bike runs very nice.  Those V4s are really smooth engines.

Yeah, the o-ring swell is usually the thing to wait on as long as your tees are not cracked and your bike has been dry a while. I had a cracked tee on my VFR a while back and it leaked fuel pretty well. I am surprised it never caught fire until I was able to break down an extra set of carbs to scavenge the tee.

The v4s have a sweet sound to them.

So nice to meet enlightened folk here.

Best sound ever is an RC30 under load. They growl.

Well the old Sabre is holding it's liquor finally.

I gave it a half-gal of gas and took it for a very short trip down the end of the block and back - just enough to see what would smoke, whether the radiator is working, whether the carbs were firing.

Seems to be okay - it bogs down terribly when it's cold, so I think it's just a case of the slides needing to be lubed up, nothing for that except using it.  My Nighthawk is the same way - bogged down terribly until I got some miles on it now it just does that when cold (of course with the shifter pawl broken it doesn't run at all....)

The engine case was smoking like a demon, but that's most likely 6 years of dust and grime from sitting idle.

My future is looking up finally.

Bah, I don't need luck now.

Been bombing around on it all day.  Once it warms up it's fine, terrible off-idle bogging but I'm going to see if putting a few tanks of gas through it will fix that.  I have that typical 4 carb Goldilocks and the Three Bears problem.  One cylinder is burning much too lean, one cylinder is burning much too rich, one cylinder is just right....
